So I see everyone talking about primeire pro, or 2.0 or 6.x and I'm not sure the difference. I only have WMM because it came with windows. I was looking into sony vegas because it's cheaper than the premiere 6.0.
Is making vidoes really this complicated? Everyone seems to be talking about crashes and problems, maybe I don't know what I'm getting myself into.
I guess what I am saying is this something I'll be able to get into without formal training or is it something I can do on my own?
I have almost no knowledge about making amv's other then the past two weeks of reading the tutorials, I've messed around with amvapp and some of my anime dvds, but I have yet to get something I can upload into WMM.
I guess I'll keep trying, I just thought I had a lot of great ideas for music videos, but I'm wondering if I can even make them.

Most people here are professional hobbyists and take thier ways VERY seriously. So they laugh in the face of someone who goes "I don't want to spend 40+ hours on a video because I only do it for fun". Well, I guess the professional hobbyists do it for fun too, but they do it in a competitive "AhHA! Look at what I can do!" way. Maybe.
I used to be like that but now that I'm actually in film school I'm more concerned about other things... Like the movie I'm supposed to be editing right now. D:
Anyway, I've never had a problem with people using WMM. But if you go to a convention with a lot of big-name AMVers and you say that's what you use, they're going to laugh in your face.
Because they assume you're bad.
Professional hobbyist AMVers don't want to waste their time looking at pieces of shit, and It's a common known fact that most people just starting out use WMM. Most people who only make AMVs for fun(and thus don't spend much time on their AMVs) use WMM. And thusly, most people who use WMM, produce less-than professional hobbyist quality.
I mean, you can still get a nice following (If you're in it for popularity) but unless you're some Super duper WMM whiz, you're not going to get noticed by, say, Vicbond.
So, in short, yes you can, there's nothing wrong with it. But just know that if you want to get noticed, you're going to have to work extra hard to get your name known.

that has been the same reason I've not gotten into amv's as much as some other stuff...I just have too many other vid/animation projects :<
WMM might be a pretty good place to start, but honestly I think it'd be just as easy to get into premiere or vegas. With basic skills, you should be able to turn out a decent vid. Then if you wanna get all crazy with effects and stuff, that comes later.
When I first started editing video in my student days, we used premiere 5.x, and I got an "evaluation" copy and taught myself to use it. It was as simple for me as figuring out that I could import and drop stuff on the timeline...I didn't really have to go looking for many tutorials...I DID start reading up though when my stuff coming out of premiere looked bad and I didn't know why, and then started using AE for any additional effects beyond cross dissolve.
I would say pick an editing software (my suggestion would be premiere 6.5 or vegas) and just start playing with it. My advice would be not to try and make your greatest AMV right off the bat, try just making simple stuff for yourself and sharing it with people for feedback, that way you can figure out technical stuff before you create your magnum opus AMV...hopefully you'll figure out some things and you'll be like "man I'm glad I figured that out before I did my GOOD vid"
Like anything, this hobby just takes time to get good at it. I guess it just depends on the level of dedication that you have to the hobby
Currently by the way, I'm using premiere 6.5 and AE 6.5 / Starting to use 7.

Wow, thanks guy for the feedback!
I think I just want to make them for fun, but that I would like others to enjoy my work and for it to be of good quality. I'm just an online gamer and a fan of anime, so at least I have a good computer.
40+ hours a week to spend on a video doesn't seem to bad to me, especially when I get inspired by something. The problem I have now is that I get inspired and then I don't know what to do, haha.
I'll keep working at it and hopefully I start figuring things out soon.
Thanks again everyone for the help, means a lot.

lol that's exactly what I did back in '01 when the guide was only like 2 pages long... not this MOUNTAIN of text and information that it is now...ZephyrStar wrote:When I first started editing video in my student days, we used premiere 5.x, and I got an "evaluation" copy and taught myself to use it. Aah the good ole days, in fact I started out in Virtual Dub. Just VDub and nothing else (but a few codecs and a stopwatch). I actually suggest that method. It's pretty fun! ... if your a sadist.
But again I've found another difference between Premiere and Pro! Like you said I used to simply use my old Premiere 5.5 timeline/ crossfade bar but nothing else! Could it handle nothing else?? I don't know. But Premiere Pro makes it reletively easy to do other effects such as RGB keys, green/ blue screen and of coarse AUDIO effects. I've pretty much put off the urge to get into AE's CONFUSING interface because PPro handles alot of the stuff on it's own. If you've got the computer (dual core, XP or Vista, 1gb+ ram) I highly suggest PPro. It's a LARGE step up from Premiere but I have a hunch it came too soon... much like these stupid mp4s...

Hey, if u really want one on one instruction, my studios always taking members. We mostly use vegas, which is like adobe but has a simpler layout and is easier to pick up.(PM if ur interested)
But if not, mostly what people have said helps, fallow the music synch wise, and make sure your quality is good and your good to go (IE: no interlacing, pixels, grain)
Welcome, and good luck.

That said, I do reserve the right to smack down whelps who get too big for their britches, thinking their first AMV set to the latest top-40 junk radio music and badly-compressed Bleach episodes is a world-beater, because I will tell them otherwise.
Those who offer the same up in hopes of learning how to do things better will receive more practical advice.
