ANIME... not cartoon...

I think I'm going to have to play devil's advocate here. Anime is a cartoon.

Sponge Bob and Boogiepop Phantom are both cartoons just like Holy Grail and Shawshank Redemption are both live action.

Having said that, I still call Japanese animation anime and American animation cartoons. Partly out of habit, but also because in most cases they are very different in both style and content.

I don't mean to step on your enthusiasm, but saying that EVERY piece of animation that EVER came out of Japan is DEEP AND MEANINGFUL (tm) is a flat-out fabrication. It's not. Some is goofy, pointless fun.

Sheesh, people are so touchy about the C-word.

I guess that comes from being hazed in school or something. I really don't understand it. Suit yourselves, I'll sit back smirking.

thats like saying Sponge Bob is anime or TMNT is anime or King of the Hill is anime cause if you call anime cartoons then you can call cartoons anime which you cant because cartoons arent anime and anime isnt cartoons

Well technically they are. Anime is just animation in another language, and they are animated.

See, this is a perfect example of the anime fan with the "I am better than you, I watch anime not cartoons" type attitude. Thanks for the demonstration Clara. The fact is, like I said before, maybe they are different, but no one outside of the strict anime fan group really gives a shit. Most people dont draw a line between the two, so there is none. You talk like all anime is brilliant and all cartoons are simple kids shows. Wake up, most anime sucks ass anyway, just like most movies. In the US, we only get to see the best stuff because they dont even bother exporting the bad stuff from Japan, and even a lot the exported stuff sucks, so that just goes to show how bad soem of the stuff we never see is. But, there are some that are really good and worth watching. Same with american animation.

The dictionary definition of a cartoon is "A humorous animated sketch"

If you don't think humorous animated programs from Japan fall under that category, then something is wrong with you, either that or you're just too stubborn to admit that a Japanese anime can actually be a cartoon. Which is often the case with fanboys/fangirls.

Wow, that's weird. I come back to the thread a little later, and all of a sudden, it's like a whole wave of "anime is just a cartoon" people decide to post all together. Guess it was just a big coincidence.

Anyways, as for my official position on the topic... I have no idea.

I can't really bring myself to agree with either side. Both have such good arguments. Oh well, maybe one day it'll hit me. Hope it doesn't hurt.

Hi everybody!Just to go ahead and let you people know...this is just my opinon,so don't get all offensive about it..here goes

"What the hell are people talkin' about Anime bein' the same thing as cartoons?they're nothin' alike!alright,to go ahead and let people know if you haven't noticed...Anime is more based around realistic experiences rather than cartoons..in an Anime,if dude is getting shot at,then he'll most like leave with a wound or die,in a cartoon,dude that would be getting shot at would probably just find a cliff to jump off of to save himself from getting shot,then when he'd hit the ground,he'd just flatten,then peel himself off..walkin' away without a scratch..and also,cartoons sometimes can be a bad influence on (kids) people,because it has happened..people has jumped off from high elevated places,hitting the ground at a speed of over 70 MPH,before they jump,expecting themself to just peel themself off of the ground,then just walk away without anything being wrong with them...and instead,in an Anime's case,since most of it's realistic anyways,it wouldn't matter what you did off an Anime,if you just walked up to some dude thinkin' you can blast a fireball in his face (DBZ),then go for it..but you're gonna get a "what the hell do you think you're doin' you stupid fuck?" look at you,then he'll probably just smack you around..but I'm talkin' about stuff like,you get sliced in the side with a sword or somethin' like that,you're not just gonna walk away without bleeding (and I'm not talkin' about you wearin' armour either,just you,yourself) you're gonna leave..well,maybe...with a big fuckin' gash in your side!and another thing...you can call me an ecchi all you want,but this is a proven fact..in an Anime (if you're a TRUE Anime fan,you'd know this then ^_^) there's big breasted chicks...now...do you see any of that in a cartoon?Hell no!do you get any fan service in a cartoon?Hell no!now I know that may have sounded perverted,but it's true..seriously...all I'm sayin' is this..Anime is meant for the Mature audiences who can understand what the "world of Anime" is trying to explain to you about real life situations...if you think it's stupid,you watch anime and tell me it doesn't have either a storyline to it or a moral,I bet I could prove you wrong watching the first 10 to 20 minutes of it...now if you're not mature enough to try and even begin to understand the concept of real life situations,then why are you even living?if you think your life is just gonna be so easy that you can somehow dodge bullets or get his by a big fuckin' nuke and just come out of the situation looking like charcoal,no,I'm sorry,you just got disentigrated...so if you're not ready to face the facts of Anime,then don't watch it!but just because you don't understand (or like) Anime's concept of real life situations,then be such an idiot about it sayin' somethin' like,"oh,well,it's a cartoon...Anime and cartoon are the same thing dude" just cause your life plain out sucks ass...that's your problem,yeah,it sucks,but that doesn't mean you have to degrade to insulting the art of Anime down to the average Joe getting paid to draw overtime in order to make their next cheap cartoon..compared to the everly overworking tons of drawers/animators/cg assistants that are putting more effort into making something that actually has a meaning to it..yeah,some cartoons have a meaning to them...they're supposed to be funny with imagination...but take the Anime "Boogiepop Phantom" for example...well,there's situations in other places that you may not know about where there's stuff like that that actually happens...you don't know for sure..they're could actually be carnivores/canibals that will just eat you for no reason what so ever...it could be based upon a true story for all you know...but ya know,life sucks..it's not always about things being funny,so why don't you watch Anime and take a look at some real life situations on what could happen to you possibly and maybe even learn something while you're at it!" what the next thing we're gonna come up with?Hentai being called porno?an awsome manga being referred to like a typical spider-man comic?LET'S SURE AS HELL HOPE NOT!

You've never seen a cartoon with chicks with huge tits!?! Where have you been? Even in shows like x-men and spider-man, I don't think I've really ever seen a less-beautiful girl.

Have you ever seen UnderGrads? I love that show. And I bet that's considered a cartoon. Kinda a lot of sex, drinking and college life for children.

There are some bad mangas and some good "typical" Spider-Man comics. Though I do dislike the amount of talking in American comics.

I'm not too sure how much we can learn from Hamtaro and Hello Kitty (hey, I do love these shows) that cannot be understood for younger audiences.

And I do think we can learn lessons from the more humouristic animated series. It's just that they deliver the message through humour, instead of through seriousness.
