A representative from Bandai made a table explaining on how the DVD releases will work:

Yes, the situation is disappointing, but the fact that Bandai actually convinced Kadokawa to have permission to make separate DVDs for the broadcast order is better than getting nothing at all. Or like what Willen said if you're tech savvy, you can reauthor your own DVD.

You know, I wouldn't be so bothered by this if they'd just put the English dub on the Special Edition DVDs as well. How could that be so hard?

He says it "takes up space". Now correct me if I'm wrong, but does having two audio tracks really take up space assuming they're using single layer DVDs?

The special edition is acceptable to me, though I guess I won't be able to satisfy my curiosity of seeing what the dub will end up like.

Eh :|
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

All's I know is that plenty of other companies put 5 episodes with Japanese stereo and English 5.1 on a DVD (don't know if DL or not), and if they're going to be putting all the bonus materials on the 1st DVD (I assume that's why there's no DVD #1 in the second chart), then they should have no problem...

Haha, Episode 5 played two of my ringtones from my cellphone. My morning wake-up ringtone(the battle theme) and my message ringtone too (the clothes changing tone).

So basically, we can get the entire series if we buy just the special edition of volumes 2-4.... since the entire broadcast order is on the bonus discs of those sets only. $60 each? I think I'll wait until the full box set comes out.

In a business case, chronological order (or DVD order) makes more sense since many people that have never heard of TMoHS will be thoroughly confused with broadcast order. Even the people in the AnimeTV episode mentioned that the mixed up order had them scratching their heads sometimes - and these people are supposedly regular anime viewers. You want to reach and not alienate the widest audience as possible.

I can imagine if you get your anime from Netflix or some other rental company and had to wait a month or 2 between DVDs you may forget what the hell happened last disc. At least the people who watched the broadcasts or fansubs got a steady weekly fix.

Plus, the extreme purists out there will never even touch the english audio track so its exclusion isn't a concern for them. For the more casual viewers this is unfortunate if you want to experience the original presentation without shelling out for the more expensive special editions.

Ultimately the blame lays with Kadokawa and not with Bandai Entertainment. At least the R1 DVDs have a version that preserves the original order - not even the Japanese got that. ;)

This is one case where having a higher storage medium like Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD would be useful. Store the entire 14 episode series on one disc and select the playback order you want. The disc/player then serves up the episodes in the desired sequence. This would also mean that the video (and audio) would have to be at a lower quality level (480p SD or 720p HD) to fit everything on a single disc (especially with HD-DVD's 30GB capacity).

I'm a little surprised that they went with a 4-4-3-3 episode count for the regular DVDs. I guessed at a 4-3-3-4 order in a previous post, but I also thought that 4-3-4-3 would be logical.

Well, I had to buy 2 new tires for my car today, but I still think I can swing the cash for the SE DVDs. Oh, and the 2nd season DVDs of AMG. And something else I can't think of now.

Anyone who want to see still pics of the 1st Volume box art and the inside contents can look here:

You know what? I'm actually going to consider shelling out $50+ just to get all this stuff. It so damn pretty!
