Didn't anybody ever teach you not to use the word you're defining in its definition?Adv1sor wrote:Anime is anime.

So Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday aren't anime because they aren't action filled plots nor do they have fantastic or futuristic themes?Adv1sor wrote:Main Entry: an·i·me

I always thought that Anime was any animated series originally produced in Japan.
But then you get the "Anime Styles", like Boondocks and Avatar, and of course Teen Titans and Totally Spies (*cringe on that one*). All 100% Produced in the United States.
But then there are some series' that are produced in Korea I think. I can't name any right off the top of my head right now. Are those anime? You decide.
And then you get the PowerPuff Girls series, the original series was done in the US, but I believe that there is a sequel series that is being produced in Japan.
And the "adult theme" being exclusively anime is a load of pooey 'cuz just look at South Park or the Simpsons. And last time I checked, Pokemon had no more "adult theme" references then lets say The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.

If you use any one definition you will exclude something. I stick with my definition, godix wrote:So Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday aren't anime because they aren't action filled plots nor do they have fantastic or futuristic themes?
As I said before, placing limits on creativity does nothing but limit the creativity.
Kitsuner's comment notwithstanding,
Anime is anime!

I agree, if anime is just Japanese animation then there is alot of "anime" which is really imitation anime. If the U.S were to buy up all the major anime and manga production companies, lets just say hypothetically, would it then still be anime if it is american owned. Or if they moved the whole operation but still the same design, editors etc, still anime. Made in Japan doesn't seem to quite be the answer.Willen wrote:There are a few small exceptions to this rule, but the simplest definition is:
Anime = animation made for the Japanese market and produced by a Japanese company in some part.
This includes some anime where a large chunk is actually animated in Korea or other countries but the intended viewers are Japanese and the company producing it is Japanese. Also, anime like Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z which is based on an American cartoon and is partly produced by a US company (Cartoon Network), it is made primarily for the Japanese market (but I guarantee you'll see it in the US eventually). Then there is the curious story of the Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust movie which premiered outside of Japan at various film festivals (which in itself isn't too unusual today), but the original release's language was English, not Japanese.
This also excludes such shows that may have been animated by a Japanese company but intended for a non-Japanese market like many older US cartoons like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987, Toei), the original Transformer series (1980s, Toei), G.I. Joe (1980s, Toei), and G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 (2005, Gonzo). Although certain Transformers series were made exclusively for the Japanese market and a TMNT OAV series are counted as anime, the rest are not.
