That works too. He definitely has some Alucard traits. The Vash-like qualities totally shine through the most, IMO.
As for the people pointing out flaws in the series... I've consistently read that it pales in comparison to the novels, which makes me really really want to read them. They must be amazing in that case.

From what I've seen of the manga (which is precious little...just a few images here and there on the net)...all I can say is that the artwork is *phenominal*. I've been scouring ebay and other sources trying to find it for a reasonable price (damn my small wallet).
And yes, the Vash qualities in Abel are very apparent...which is another criticism some people have. They don't think it's very original. Personally, I could care less. Abel's just too dang pretty for me not to like him.
Wooops...the fangirl in me just escaped...

I hear you about the artwork in the manga... I'm currently planning an Astaroshe cosplay, but that's an entirely different nightmare... I mean story.
I've heard the criticisms about Abel being too Vash-like before as well, but frankly, I doubt Vash was the original hilarious-goofball-with-angsty-past, you know? It's not exactly THAT novel of an idea. Vash happens to be the most well-known example, but it's a common character type, to varying degrees.

Exactly. What matters is that there are original ideas put forth within that character type - that's what makes each character their own unique individual. All characters are the same at very base levels (i.e. male vs. female, long hair vs. short, etc). It's those smaller traits, background stories, portrayals, etc. that make them who they are. Anime in general has a lot of these "stereotypes" - bishies overall are a great example - but, like I said, it's the little things that stand out, for me anyway. Heck, IMO, even Bebop's Spike had a little bit 'o the Vash in him.Solaria735 wrote:I've heard the criticisms about Abel being too Vash-like before as well, but frankly, I doubt Vash was the original hilarious-goofball-with-angsty-past, you know? Personally, when I read these criticisms, all I can think of is how original it was of them to create a vampire character that feeds on other vampires and how they worked that element into the story. Makes me wonder, in the course of the whole foodchain thing...if vampires feed on humans, and Crusniks feed on vampires...what feeds on Crusniks? LOL

After seeing all the episodes on Adult Swim, I have to say there are only 2 things this show has it going:
- the pretty visuals thanks to Gonzo (animation on the other hand...)
- the EXTREMELY KICKASS English dub done by FUNimation. Seriously, this has to be one of their best works up to date, completely obliterating the original Japanese performances.
Other than that, obviously there's much more to the story (which is too bad the original author died before this anime was made). And is it just me or does anyone think this show would have been much better if they made Ester THE main character since she got one hell of a development throughout the series.

I really liked this anime. In fact, I'd place it amongst my top three favourite shows. I don't really see what people are complaining about, with regard to lack of originality and lack of depth. It's difficult to create a truly original character, you have to draw your influences from somewhere. I'd even hazard a sweeping generalisation and say that there really are no original characters, but there are ways to make characters appear fresh. The only characters I really felt were stilted, if not plan annoying were Catarina [stilted], and Francesco [annoying]. As for a lack of depth, I'd disagree with this idea, because even though the show is a little flaky in parts, it's story is quite gripping, albeit seemingly unfinished.
I was a little annoyed with how they ended it. I wanted to see more of what was going to happen next. >_> Well, I suppose I'll just have to read the novels then.
