If you're embarrassed by it, don't release it.
I like the idea of owning your mistakes as well as your successes. It's healthy to realize that people sometimes have a learning curve at the beginning of learning a new skill, or that people make mistakes. (OMG! People might think that you're human! We can't have that!)
Hell, I find it inspiring that someone can make a couple of crappy videos and then go on to greatness. Is that so unusual? *shrug*
But I'll stick by: If you're embarrassed by it, don't release it. You basically want to withdraw things off the internet, and lots of people with embarrassing photos of themselves have learned the hard way that it's not quite that easy.

By default I'd suggest all downloadable videos be shown and non-downloadable videos hidden. Removing the non-downloadable videos alone would cut some peoples profiles down from dozens of videos to a small handful, thus taking care of that overloading people with videos problem Kusoyaro mentioned.jasper-isis wrote:We could make all videos visible as the default, and then allow people to "hide" entries as they please. I'm imagining a list that would instantly slide to reveal hidden entries if the "view all" button is clicked. No idea how difficult it would be to implement though. :/

People shouldn't be allowed any option to change their mind about a decision?SarahtheBoring wrote:If you're embarrassed by it, don't release it.
I think people feel a degree of frustration and helplessness over how little control they have over their own contributions to the site. And I'm pretty sure the reasons for the restrictions in place mostly relate to maintaining the integrity of the database. With this portfolio option, it's pretty much win-win.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

I'm pretty sure that two years ago I had quite a different idea of what makes a good AMV and what doesn't, otherwise quite a few of mine would never have been uploaded to the .org. A lot of people probably feel the same way. Yeah, we all have bad videos and good videos, but we also have bad ops and good ops on videos, and we're given the option to choose which of those are displayed. Or not displayed at all. Like angel said, it could just be an option, whether or not a person wants to utilize it is up to them.

Yes, please. Good idea.
Even if it's automated it would be nice. Like it would automatically show the 5/10/etc most recent videos - with a link to click if you want to view more. It's not a matter of embarassment, it's a matter of wanting new browsers to look at my recent work - instead of harping on the old stuff without ever getting to the bottom of that very long profile page.
The purpose of the site is to list all your videos. Even if I'd never uploaded the sucky ones, I'd still have one very long list of videos. Anything that highlights the recent ones over the old ones would be good.
We could always sort the list backwards from recent to oldest. That wouldn't give people any more control over their vids than they have now, wouldn't let them hide embarassing local-locked vids, but it would highlight the recent work over the old crap.

The idea sounds solid for those with huge catalogs. I won't benefit from it, but i can see where others that put out a lot of videos would, and the benefits are akin to another "recommendations" layer - which is always great.
(tangent)
This discussion also brings up a fear that i've never seen anyone vocalize. The threat of someone that doesn't get their way (re: control of their videos) doing something to intentionally compromise the database - or using a threat of such to blackmail phade into relenting on the database rules. It's a fine line we tread, but i wouldn't put it past some people that are really ornery to resort to such measures.

Hammering? Everybody's giving this idea blowjobs except me, and I have these silly ideas about not putting impossibly high demands on people.
Yes, I think it makes perfect sense to change your mind about what's good. That's why I don't think it's something to be ashamed of. I think it sets a sad precedent to expect people to put out 100% absolutely perfect product from the first day they set their eyes on a computer, with no changes and no growth whatsoever. It's already something that people feel really bad and ashamed about; how much worse is it going to get if nobody sees that even good editors have to start somewhere?
This sounds too dramatic. Really, I only think that you don't have to feel like a bad person because you made an AMV with not so great compression six years ago, or whatever. Seriously, it's not that big a deal to anyone but you. If people write ops on old videos and can't get it through their skulls that they're not representative of your talent now, then fuck 'em.
