Editors...do you do other video stuff?
Just out of curiosity, I was wondering if any of you AMV editors do any other video or film work on the side, either as a job, or just another hobby. And if you do, do you find that your AMV work and experimentation influences what you do in your other video/film projects and vice-versa?
I thought it would be interesting to see how many of us have professional or occupational talent around here, as opposed to the number of amateur editors. Of course, the amateur is going to outnumber the proffesionals, but still, I'm curious.
As for me, I'm a film/video production student in college right now. Been doing video stuff as a hobby for years, though I never got into serious digital editing until recently. I've found that in the past year or so, whenever I'm working on some video project, I tend to try and relate my music source to whatever is happening on screen. Such as, if there's a prominent beat to the music, I tend to try and have cuts where that beat occurs, due to doing that in the AMV's I've made. (and I know I have very few AMV's on the org, but still, once you make one or two, you know exactly what the experience is all about)

most of the people i know on this site have had/are in some kind of graphic design class...
i havent done anything "class wise" or professionally myself... all amature here O: but i have done "music videos" of my nieces and nephews and a few videos for that streaming tube site...
i suppose amvs "influence" that as i have a hard time working with video that has its own audio and making it not boring... i end up making music videos better than non-music videos

No offense, but your wording comes across as completely arrogant and superior. The whole "how many of us have professional talent" load is like if I were to go on a fanfiction website and act as though I were automatically better than most the writers there because I'm finishing up my BA in English Rhetoric.Xarathion wrote:I thought it would be interesting to see how many of us have professional or occupational talent around here, as opposed to the number of amateur editors. I don't know if you meant to come across like that, but (giving you the benefit of the doubt) I thought I'd let you know.
As for doing other video stuff, I've personally made non-anime music videos and for quite a few years was one of the film editors for the school TV show, but nothing professional or occupational.

I'd definately like to take a class on it, if my college offered one...JaddziaDax wrote:most of the people i know on this site have had/are in some kind of graphic design class...

Same deal here. They used to have a desktop video production class at my university, but that got changed into a night class; then it became an online class that you had to pay extra (over and above tuition) to even take and there was no assurances it would even count as a free elective for my major.Cornwiggle wrote:I'd definately like to take a class on it, if my college offered one...
I am taking a Graphics programming course though, and I'm sure I'll incorporate stuff I learn there into a video or 2 I make in the future.
As to the tone of the post, i think it's being read into too far, but **reality check** when you're professionally trained, people expect you'll be better at something - and if your training has any merit you damned well better be.

Yeah...I didn't really mean it to come across like that. I was going more by dictionary definitions, with professional meaning be paid to do stuff, and amateur meaning without pay or just a hobby.staces wrote:I don't know if you meant to come across like that, but (giving you the benefit of the doubt) I thought I'd let you know.
For instance, a professional may have better equipment and resources to pull from. But like you said, on the same token, there's no reason an amateur doesn't have access to those things as well.
I also don't know any professional/student video people who make AMV's alongside their other video projects as well, even though they have just as much editing skills and interest in anime as we do. That's the other reason why I asked it that way, since it's largely been one or the other in my experience.

Imo, you're reading into it too much.staces wrote:No offense, but your wording comes across as completely arrogant and superior. It's natural for people who do something for a living* (or are studying to do something for a living) to be "better" at it than people who just do it for fun
*defenition of a professional is someone who does a particular activity (or set of activities) for a living. Anyone else is technically an ameteur, with some that can be called professional amateurs (those who do something for fun at the skill level of a professional)
myself...nope, this is all the video work I'm doing. My majors have almost nothing to do with film and related areas

While I agree with you 100% on that one, English is an interesting language. You see when a word is misused so often that people begin to mistake it's misuse as it's correct definition (in this case, having "professional" or "pro" meaning "really good at something"). For some stupid reason, a lot of English dictionaries take this constant misuse of language and actually add it to a definition. I'm sure it must happen in other languages too.Kariudo wrote:*defenition of a professional is someone who does a particular activity (or set of activities) for a living. From what I've understood Beowulf is doing editing for a living. Niotex is doing a video production course right now (or he was planned to do that, but I don't know if he went ahead with it).
As for me, I did a course Film&Video at my university a couple of years ago and that's how I got into editing. Since then I applied twice to the film academy (one time rejected after the second round and the other one is currently in process, so I do want to do something with film) and made a few short movies with a friend - but on an amateur level (damn I need to encode my movies and put them online!)
But you know what I'm wondering - if you do something related to film (editing) - if the interest comes from editing AMV's first or the reversed way - because the first experience can influence the latter. I did the editing of short movies first and started working on AMV's a year ago and I feel (correct me if I'm wrong here) as if I work differently than the people that didn't do editing before (more structured editing and storyline-based as opposed to editing from what you feel from the music - but I could be wrong about this though).
