If they knew the word Cartoon, that's what they should call the stuff on Cartoon Network. Cause I don't think that they call everything that is animated, Anime. That would be way too simple.

And I don't care what the definitions of any of the words are..... Anime and Cartoons are different things, they have different names, and those names should be used accordingly.

--------------

Everything can be considered art.... but sometimes people are ridiculous and just use that as an excuse.

That's it, two of you (not naming names) are the most incredibly stubborn fanboys or fangirls I've ever come across. You make that certain somebody who needed to know what the definition of "is" is, look like a nuclear physicist.

It's no use arguing, just go on believing what you want to believe and when you are awakened to the real world of anthrological, linguistic and societal study of Japan you will know you're just using the word cartoon to suit your own selfish definition.

Humorous anime are cartoons. End of story, and end of my participation in this assanine and impossible argument.

Humorous Anime can be called cartoons only because cartoon can mean something funny....

But still....... Why go through the trouble of saying that they are cartoons? It's not really worth it when you consider that "Anime Comedy" is a much better and accurate description...... "Anime Comedy" actually tells you what it is.....

And besides, think about if you are a Cartoon fan looking for Cartoons. You're probably be looking for Scooby-Doo, Charlie Brown, Sponge Bob Square Pants, etc. It would get annoying if you kept coming across something like "Excel Saga" and "Dragon-Half" because you wouldn't know what the hell those are, so stuff like that should be in a "Anime" category, not "Cartoon" category.

They both are Animation, but they are different TYPES of Animation. Well, that's how they should be known.

But yeah, saying that Cartoons are Anime is alot better than saying that Anime are Cartoons. But's it still a bit inaccurate.

A drawing depicting a humorous situation, often accompanied by a caption.
A drawing representing current public figures or issues symbolically and often satirically: a political cartoon.
A preliminary sketch similar in size to the work, such as a fresco, that is to be copied from it.
An animated cartoon.
A comic strip.
A ridiculously oversimplified or stereotypical representation: criticized the actor's portrayal of Jefferson as a historically inaccurate cartoon.

Not all Japanese anime are cartoons.

:?

so....what do I call Grave of the fireflies? If "cartoon" is supposed to mean a satircal, funny, or oversimplified animated production to an American audience what should I call something serious in english? Let alone japanese animation that isn't funny...I can't call it a cartoon and I am just calling it another name for cartoon (in japanese) if I say anime?
What would I call Final Fantasy: the spirits within movie? Or the 1980's Wizard movie? Or the animated Hobbit, Lord of the rings..?

The definition of animated cartoon seems like it's just a moving version of something funny and doesn't help me decide what is a cartoon past movement. Stuff is starting to contradict itself definition wise here...so I can no longer comprehend any furthur meaning from this discussion ...I must either leave this fiasco or be caught in a lethal paradox that most likely results in sitting in a corner trying to get a clear cut definition of an almost purely social and "slang" like definition..

Yeah!

It's like I said, the definition of Anime and Cartoon doesn't matter in considering the difference that is between them.

Let me try saying it this way:Who you are is more important what your name is.

Or for this topic:
What they are is more important than what their names are.

Actually.... I mean:

What they really are is more important than what their names are said to mean.

Yes.. that was a typo....the first one should have said:

Who you are is more important than what your name is.
