Why do people confuse 'anime' with just plain 'cartoons'???

This topic is to basically express my indignation at the fact that many beple think that it is 'babyish' to watch anime as they confuse it with normal 'cartoons' (actually the tpoic is self-explanatory...)

Whenever I sit down to watch an anime somebody will come over and say- "Oh, you're still watching cartoons! Come on, grow up!
Which is SOOOO irritating!!!

Technically anime is animation and cartoons are also, well, animation but still...I wouldn't like my brother to watch Fushigi Yuugi ...The point I'm rying to press upon is anime is not for babies...not all anime is...(or even manga)...

I know the feeling, every time i watched Trinity Blood, my mom say "why dont you put on a movie instead of cartoons!"

From what i understand its from not knowing the difference, and/or they're trying to get under your skin.
