Exactly. I get 200gigs a month for $11 on my site. I've been browsing another that offers the same for $5 a month (less disc space). I have no idea what the org spends.
Org has a set bandwidth pipe for a set fee.

Your crypticness knows no bounds, Kalium. However, it still raises the question: how much do you need from us? We're the donators, we're willing to contribute to a site we love. We just want to make sure our donations are useful. If we're donating to a lost cause, why waste the money, and if we're donating to a cause already funded, why waste the money? Rather it would be nice to know where the money is going so we can make sure we continue to help the Org continue to provide us with the services we desire.

Unless of course Phade is taking a few trips to Mootexico or putting away for his kids' $200,000 college tuition as it will no doubt will be in 2020 (mine was $70,000 so perhaps that's conservative...).

:amv:

I don't know the exact details, but I know that said fee isn't small. Beyond that, there are hardware costs and such.

Right, which is why I want to know I'm actually doing something, rather than not making a difference.

Bandwidth costs vary, depending on the system resources used. A site which has straightforward downloads (not a lot of dynamic content, you know, like message boards and user control panels and other features that require databases) can get away with a cheap web hosting plan. I have sites like that. They use up perhaps a total of several 100 GB a month, and yet I pay peanuts. But if I were to start adding databases and getting a HUGE amount of users coming on at the same time, then I'm sure I'd need to get dedicated hosting, which would cost a LOT more.

I am a donater for the same reason as JaddziaDax: I don't want to feel like a leech. I sometimes view the videos here (fabulous stuff!), but to be honest I enjoy this place because it is an excellent resource for any type of fan video authoring. I've found some wonderful helpful information here for editing on a Mac. Donating a small sum was the least I could do! :D

Kind of a late reply... like Kalium, I don't know all the details, but to give an idea of the traffic this site generates:

Over the past year, the two video servers alone generated 70Mb/s of data on average. If you do the math that comes out to be approximately 22456 gigabytes of data a month or 263 terabytes of transfer a year.

By comparison, RDS's website only generates 400 gigabytes a month on a dedicated server.

Also, that spiffy 2 terabyte server that a-m-v.org got back in Feb '05 is already 75% full so we will need an additional server before too long.

Other collocation costs to take into consideration include rack space, physical security, and any hands on labor the collocation facility provides.

Who does all of the budgetting, acquiring new servers, phade? Does he, or some company, hold the actual servers?

Collocation means you own the servers but they are housed in a data centers for high speed connections to the internet 'core' or 'backbone'. So a-m-v.org owns the servers but they are housed in a data center. I'm certain Phade does the budgeting since he created the site and pays the bills. Derobert probably plays a large role in choosing hardware since he configured and installed the last server.
