I download and sort them after I've watched them (MEP, drama/action, upbeat/comedy), then burn off DVDs when any of those folders reaches DVD size. Occasionally when any two combined categories reach DVD size. So anywhere from 0 to 6 gigs or so. I keep my own on hand all the time, though.
For a while I had a folder of favorites on my hard drive all the time, but it's usually just as easy to watch them from DVD, and I need the space.

Right now I have about 130 on my hard drive totalling 6.67 GB, although I have probably something like 20 CDs completely full as well. I tend not to go above 10 GB on my computer before I back them up to CD, especially because I rarely delete videos if I think there's a chance I might want to watch them again sometime in the future. I also have a text file that tells me which AMVs are on which discs...>_>

I never let myself go above 300 videos in my "permanent collection," and I don't back them up to CD/DVD. This could be considered my downfall, given my next point. My HD went semi-corrupt, and I had to replace every single video on it. Well, I've been making this collection for a long, long time, so a number of those videos I simply couldn't get back. Others I realized I didn't want back. Still others were things that just come from my digital packrat-ism (example: Elfen Lied fansubs when I already bought the DVDs ages ago).
Between what I was able to re-download from various sources, I now have 187 videos back on my HD. Of course, I also keep a well-organized Word document that lists another 627 videos that were interesting enough to take note of, but not quite enough for me to want to keep. Furthermore, I'm always on a decent internet connection, so I don't mind having to re-download something if I want to watch it.
Properties say that I'm eating up 8.83 gigs of my HD with these AMVs.
