(beside the point) What I was trying to say is that either they're doing a good job of picking shows or I haven't been exposed to enough anime. (Please don't send me a list of "stuff to watch".) Which is it? I seem to have some adversity to CN "stealing" a show that I've watched subbed and having it broadcast with horrible English voice actors. Not saying that it's all bad, but any diehard fan of Eureka Seven (hell, even Naruto) can tell you that the show suffers from it. (seriously, limit of questions? wtf is that?) FMA on the other hand, not so much. So now I have non-otaku friends who see these shows on [AS] and think less of not just the particular show, but anime in general, and I don’t want that.
I won’t send you links to watch, but I always recommend Berserk. Anyway, just because your friends think less due to their "horrible English translation" (Those are air quotes by the way) does not mean you still don't have to like the show. And besides, you could always buy the DVDs and show them the anime subbed. They my be into it more maybe not. Sometimes anime is just not for certain people. On that note try and go outside CN and AS. I myself found out more about anime through the use of both those channels and eventually broke off from them. I hardly ever watch either now, because I have over four books selves of anime DVDs, seven series I still need to watch. Currently watching Wolf's Rain for the first time, I suspect you’re a fine due to your Avatar. He is my favorite character, but besides that go outside those channels and buy some DVDs. If you don't know what to buy you can look at some trailers, I mean even this site has fan made trailers, and half the animes I have are from this site. Such as Azumanga Daioh. In all honesty I would have never even heard of the anime if it wasn't for this site. Also go out and just buy one. I mean sometime I go to Best buy see a cool box set collection for 50 dollars of some series I've never heard off and buy it. If all else fails my wife got into more anime because of me. At first she was only a die hard DBZ fan for many years and thought that that was the only anime out there for a long time, for she never saw or heard of any other. We met and now her world is open to much more. So find a friend with a huge collection or find a boy/girl/friend/wife/husband assuming you don't already have one who also has a large collection of anime and have them introduce you to much more. (Don't go out with them for just that reason of course.) Then soon you will find your list with many animes some from CN and AS and others, like Berserk, CN and AS would not show if their life depended on it. So these are a few ways to broaden your horizon.
