I know I'm running low on disk space but still 7 gig for 1/3 of an episodeis a bit mush is it possible to split these clips in a more space efficient way?

Cut out the rest of the things you know you probably won't use. If you use those scene markers over the parts you don't want and press delete, it will cut off those bits when you finally go ahead and render an output.
