Beefs you have with your favorite dubbing companies

Post by Cornwiggle » Thu Apr 12, 2007 3:12 pm

I thought that this would make a somewhat interesting topic yesterday when I was watching an episode of Fruits Basket on FUNi TV.

FUNimation is the only I'll mention in mine, but feel free to point out any problems you have with certain dubbing companies. I like FUNi, I really do, now they do a good job and keeping the script the same, they have good VAs (in my opinion) and know how to really get all those series out to everyone. The one problem I have with them, and still do since they still haven't improved on it is:

They can't say "Ka-zu-ma"
Every show where there's a Kazuma, they say it "Ka-zooma". The first I remember being with Kuwabara in YYH, his name is Kuwabara Kazuma, or backwards for western. But then I saw S-CRY-ed. I got the name "Ka-zu-ma" inscribed into my head where I can't even think about "Ka-zooma" without cringing. I'm just glad they didn't get S-CRY-ed, imagine that. Though maybe they would have realized it. So on Fruits Basket it was the episode where...big surprise Kazuma comes in and they STILL say it "Ka-zooma".
I've never ever heard that name in Japanese pronounced that way. I just don't know why it's so hard to fix too, they watch it in Japanese, they can't pick up that they're saying it stupidly? They can't tell their VAs how to pronounce it? It just annoys me...

I generally don't have a problem with watching dubs.

I generally don't have a problem with dubs, but I think they need to eliminate the phrase "dilly dally shilly shally" from the English vocabulary though.

i never had a problem with dubs...until the day i actually watched a well subbed ep, i then rewatched all the of the series in subs that i had previously watched dubbed and was puzzled at how ugly the english language sounds when used in an anime series

For me it's usually however I watched the eries first that I continue to watch it in. One of the few exceptions is Kodocha (Child's Toy/Kodomo no Omocha) which I've seen in fansubbed form previously. However, when FUNimation got the rights to the show, they couldn't get the rights to the first (and second) opening song, Jyuukuji no News (5 O'Clock News), so they start with the third opening to the show, and everytime the song is being played in the Japanese track they just BLANK the audio. Thanks, FUNi. My anger at this was at least ameliorated by the rather excellent dubbing job, save one critical fact.

A-ki-to. NOT A-KEEEE-to. Jeez. Pronouncing Japanese is stupidly easy as long as there isn't a y-containing syllable in there....
Life's short.

That's the same problem they have with Ka-zu-ma. I still don't know how hard it is to watch the original version and tell the VAs how to say it...

And that's not the only dub they mess up "A-KEEEE-to" either. >_>
