Avi's are fine. However, Xvid and DivX can cause all sorts of problems with editing. You'll need to encode those into a lossless codec such as HuffyUV or Lagarith.44

use those to mark the beginning and the end of the "clips" you want so you can save room
This also does a good job explaining... well, everything: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtechbeta/
And you should resize your avatar yourself. The issue of the edit button has been discussed many times. Is only available in the MEP section, announcement section, and maybe a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head.

Also, your sig is against the forum rules
Forum Rules wrote:Forum signatures shall have no greater total dimensions than 600 pixels wide and 80 pixels high or four lines of normal-sized text (font size 12). Any signature exceeding these total dimensions or any single image that goes beyond the aforementioned limits may be removed or altered without warning.

for long answer Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides

avi is just the container/file extension - xvid is the type of compression
so yeah you need xvid codec to play it on your PC
