Okay. There's something I really don't understand.

Why is it that WMM crashes with some of my .AVI files but not with others? video game clips in avi format work just fine and so do some of the older anime I downloaded a couple of years back, but lately the any of the anime that I download and try to use in WMM which is in avi format will crash the program about 5 seconds after I load it.

It doesn't make any sense. They're both the same format and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them when I play them in Media Player and stuff. D: Why would that be?

There are a number of codecs that have the "avi" extension. Divx, xvid, huffyuv, lagarith, and a handful of shoddy windows formats like Intel and Ligos Indeo.

Just because all the file names end in avi doesn't mean they're the same format. WMM can handle huffyuv and most of those nasty windows formats. It can't handle xvid, divx, or lagarith.

Open the file in Virtualdub and check 'file information' to see what the codec is. Convert it to huffyuv before you try to import it in wmm. Or rip dvds for footage instead of downloading random files.

I don't mean to double post, but I just realized I've used files ripped using Xvid and Divx in WMM plenty of times and I never had problems with them. O.o I guess that leaves Lagarith, but I thought I'd note that. Thanks anyway.

No, you're making a logical error there. Just because it worked once doesn't mean it will work in the future. WMM sometimes plays nice with video encoded in ways that aren't conducive to editing, that is a mistake. Never use lossy encodes like XviD or DivX in editing programs.

Your WMM must be different than mine...because Xvid is the codec mine handles the best.

My experience is 50-50, but it did Crash millions of times.

My WMM HATES DivX...it's slow as hell to edit with, causes multiple crashes, and for some reason a lot of time I try to do it, I can't overlay.

It just..really hates DivX, but loves Xvid...but it's all fine by me.
