A trouble with particular AMVs

That happened to me too a couple of months back. I think there are many versions of the wmv encoder, and one of them is causing problems if you haven't downloaded the latest version of the codec on Microsoft's website. Windows update doesn't install it automatically.
I downloaded the codec (no need to download WMP, btw, just the codec) and now everything is playing fine. I don't have the link for the codec, but you should find it easily by googling something like "wmv codec site:microsoft.com".

Yeah, but I've noticed that sometimes VLC is seriously allergic to anything in wmv, so I'm not sure that would help in this case.Zarxrax wrote:Don't. The suggestion to use VLC media player is good though. It contains decoders for everything built into the player, so you don't need any codecs.

just a few days ago I had an overlay problem that no codec would fix. I had to update my ATI drivers. It seems to be gone now.Zarxrax wrote:Don't. anyway it looked like a codec problem, the videos just played in a blank window... as if you took a screenshot of the video in a non-compliant program. One of the first things I did was try VLC, but that didn't fix the problem. Just saying if VLC doesn't work, you may have to update your video drivers

This sounds like the user may not have been using a mod16 resolution. If you have ffdshow, you can open up the video decoder configuration tool and scroll down the left hand menu to miscellaneous. In work around encoder bugs area, check the box that says 'edge' and click ok. That should fix the problem if this is the cause. Too bad the user chose to not listen to you though... some people just don't know how to take criticism.

Actually... maybe I'm completely wrong... I didn't see that it was a wmv until just now.
EDIT: Based on what you have told us, I was able to find the videos you were refering to. The resolutions of these files are as follows:
856x480
428x240
856x480
In other words, the videos' widths are indeed not in multiples of 16. Try my suggestion in the post above and see if that works.

ffdshow... That sounds familiar, is that part of AMV package that you download to make music videos?
Man. I don't know that I have the latest version of WMP. My computer's a couple years old, so probably not.

P.S. And thanks for the comment about her not listening to my comment, Corran. I really needed to hear that. (I'd actually started to think I had done something wrong.)
Who knew non-16 multiplier resolution could cause so many problems?

While it is in the AMVapp, FFDshow is also included in the CCCP codec pack. It is a minimalist codec pack meant strictly for video playback that is highly recommended. Other codec packs install all kinds of crap and encoders you don't need that could play havoc on your computer. (Hence Zarx's recommendation against k-lite.)

But VLC is really good too... if there is a problem playing the file in it though, I'm not sure what config option is available like in ffdshow to fix it. (and that's even assuming my suggestion really does work...)

I tried VLC, and if anything the video looked worse. I'll definitely try ffdshow, and updating Windows Media Player.
Good grief.

Um, I feel really stupid now.
How do I get to the video decoder configuration tool?
