DVD burners

I've had more problems (not a lot, all relative) with DVD+R than DVD-R. DVD+R and -R are supposed to be about the same (from what I've read) compatibility-wise with new DVD players, but but in my experience DVD-R is more compatible with older models - and that's mostly what I've run into with clients (older DVD players can't read + discs).

As for which one to get, get whichever one is cheaper ^_^

Unless you want to start duplicating, then invest in DVD-RAM

I sure hope it's just the CD-RW burning speed. Sucks about the 2x read for DVDs though...so retarded on their part.

BTW where'd you get some 4x media and how much is it? I've been meaning to try my firmware update out and making sure it well...worked.

Another random question, but do your OS's crash if you use Nero to burn a DVD-R and do something ELSE other than burn? I believe mine has crashed twice when I did something like surf or chat and thus when I do a DVD burn, I leave it alone. Maybe it's not related, but seems to be since it was twice...I guess this is an entirely different question and I'm de-railng the topic.

Basically it's 25 for $45. I've used them for mainly data discs but I have made a video disc with them and it worked just fine. I used the software that came with the drive: RecordNow DX and Sonic MyDVD. No crashes on WinXP or Win2K. I haven't tried Nero yet.

Hmm...maybe it's Nero then. I tend to stay away from other burning software (other than Nero), but maybe I'll try them out since well...crashing and losing a DVD (~1 - 2 bucks) is NOT cool

BTW was the video disc fairly easy to make? I've been thinking about encoding some AMVs to MPEG-2 and seeing if I can make a cool DVD..just for the hell of it

Hey,

The DVD authoring software MyDVD is ultra-basic. You choose some title page stuff like some text and background. Then you pick the clips you want and little titles under each. Submenues are an option. The only thing is that when you choose a clip on the burnt disc, it plays from there to the end of the disc. I haven't tried the submenu thing and that may be different. But like I said, it was ultra-basic but it worked. It even encoded the clips for me (I pointed the program to the avi master copies I have). Encoding took a loooooong time, a couple hours.

I would like to use a more powerful program that can have more control over where you go next after you select a clip and between-menu animations and such. But, oh well, that will be later on.

That supports my experience over the past 24 hours. I tried burning an AMV to two different types of DVDs: Verbatim DVD-R 2X and TDK DVD+R 4X. Then tested them in three different players: 6-yr old Sony, 4-yr old Apex, and 2-yr old Toshiba.
The DVD-R only worked in the Toshiba. The DVD+R didn't work in any of them.

If there is a Target department store near you, they have TDK 4X DVD+R on sale *this week* at $30 for a spindle of 20. Same deal for TDK DVD-R, but they're only 2X.

My drive came with the SE version of Ulead MovieFactory. I've only used it a few times, but it's easy enough. Not sure if it can do complex menus; it does have many pre-made templates. I need to use it some more to be sure, but I may just go ahead and get the full version (sells for $50)

BTW, it converted a 4-minute AVI file (DV codec, produced by Vegas Video) to a VOB in about 5 minutes. Total time to burn a DVD with a single AMV was 10-15 minutes including time to set up the burn session.

Oh, I should have stated that the burn that I was converting was about 1.25 hours of footage (home video stuff, not just AMVs). The creation was on dual PIII 600 machine with 256M RAM. I'm not sure exactly how long it took, but it was more than 2 hours (I let it run then went to sleep

).
