How come a-m-v.org doesn't use .ZIP format?

And there can still be corruption in an avi file even though the index isnt broken, too.

Vdub will rebuild the index as well. The problem really depends on the resiliency of the codec and the container, but most codecs are implemented in such a way that corrupt info isn't a problem. Mpeg 4 is one of the best standards for this as it was designed for high-error low-bandwidth environments.
