The problem with your question, slackergirl, is that editing isn't that demanding on your system, at least not at the amateur level. Any machine you buy off the shelf at Best Buy or CompUSA will do the job.
Point well taken, but my concern isn't really what I'll be doing with the system tomorrow, but what I'll want to do 2 or 3 years from now. Like I said, expandability is key. I would like a system that can do more than video editing, if I find I want to do those things.

Also, I've always wanted to put together my own system, so might at well learn to do it now while I'm still relatively young! (though I would hesitate to classify myself as a young'un :P ) I'm sure with a little backup I can do it fine. It's not like putting soup on a stick! (I AM technically a surgeon, after all.) I'll look into the barebones systems some more, but I think I might want to use this as a learning experience as well.
I should also add, DO NOT skimp on the memory.
Another good point. I've had memory problems in the past, so I'm well aware. Thanks for the reminder, Wheee_It's_Me! I'll keep those brands in mind. And I'm not dismissing Intel; I've been very happy w/ my P3 (and my P1 before that, which lasted 4 years). But I also want to try something new, see what the fuss is about for myself, hence (part of) my decision to go with AMD. I contemplated a dual processor setup - but I think maybe I should shoot for getting 1 CPU going before having to worry about 2!

While we're on the subject, when are they going to release the Sempron?...

I've heard August 17, mostly from The Inquirer. After which things become [more] simple as Athlon XP/MP/Duron get end-of-lifed within the next year or so.

article.

A first place to check is Maximum PC magazine, http://maximumpc.com/.
I think their next issue will have their annual Dream Machine. They have lots of how to advice, many reviews of the latest and hottest pieces, interesting articals, best it's only $12 a year. Also check TigerDirect online for some good bargains on parts.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

if you want expandability, you would have to go intel, sorry about the amd factor, but right now, the new pci-express technology is out, and same with the new p4 lga 775... if you want more than just editing, i'd say to go with the pci-express on the intels, because eventually(in a few years, as you say), everything is going to go pci-express. It's best not to worry so much about it now if you're not going to build it soon.

But also, eventually, everything is going to go 64-bit... and, um, has Intel released a 64-bit processor yet? :?

The Itaniums are all 64bit procesors, so are all the newest Xeons. Which was a lil stupid on their part cause that basically just killed off their Itanium processor line. *shrugs*

My bad, forgot about the Itanium. I thought they gave up on that architecture anyway, though.

Okay, should have asked: has Intel released a consumer-grade 64-bit processor yet?
