* Good storyline, or at least some point to the video
* Nice video quality. If I can fullscreen it without having to guess what's going on under all the pixels, I'm happy!
* Sync. Sync. SYNC! Random scenes + music irks me.
* If I don't look to see how much longer is left halfway through, that's a good thing. :3
Dislikes:
* Effects just for the sake of effects.

Like:
Music choice that actually goes with the anime. The mood HAS to match or it's no go.
Sync - action, lyric, mood, movement... preferably all four.
Decent visual quality.
Originality in clip choices. I like seeing vids that put a new face on an anime series by choosing clips that haven't been used a thousand times before.
Some evidence of concept, however simple.
Dislike:
The opposites of all the above, really.
On a side note, I'm much like Arigatomina in that there are vids I can appreciate, but don't actually like that much. There's a bunch of really technically accomplished vids out there that I deleted straight off my hard drive after I'd watched them once. I need to be affected by the vid in some way, whether that be identifying with the concept, the anime, the song, the mood... whatever.

Good sync aswell as beat as lyric (if it has any) a nice flow (no random scenes) and a shit load of eyecandy that is there for a resson or has a propper excuse or is for that mather totaly original and hasnt bin done before... might seem like a pretty simple list but... there are few video's i like and i might have to high standarts... atleast it pushes me to be as original as i can with my own video's and make sure i dont undergo the flaws that i hate so much.. and so far i know i've bin doing good on that department the last year so no quastions asked and i'll just continue beeing a picky bastard =O

Good:
- * A solid concept
* Good synch
* Coherent and comprehensible
* A dash of originality
* Comedy is always good
* Tasteful use of effects
- * Unoriginal tripe
* Incoherent videos (unless it's satire, and that's the point)
* Out of synch for no reason
* Ugly or pointless effects
* SUBS! AHHHHH THE SUBS!

For me, it's more of an emotional thing...
A good video...one that I keep on my playlist...elicits some sort of emotional response from me. A comedy that makes me laugh, a horror that makes me squirm, a drama that makes me cry or sends shivers down my spine...
Of course, a lot of things go into making a video that does those things. Good editing, lyric and/or beat synch, appropriate song choice and clip selections...it all adds up. But, it's very hard for me to really put my finger on one thing (or even a series of things) that make an amv good or bad. There have even been a couple amvs using subtitles that I've kept...also a couple that used dbz. It's all in how the creator got the point across.
When it comes to bad, though...I have to agree with Jub...the ONE thing that makes my skin crawl more than anything is effects for effects sake. I'm not that big an effects person anyway, so when they're overused (or repeated), it really gets to me. The other thing that has bothered me about some videos is the lack of interpretation...lyric metaphors that get turned into literal translations, etc. And songs that don't fit the anime or concept at ALL.
All that said...if I had to sum it up for what makes an AMV good...if a creator has put their heart into it...I think the viewer can tell, and that's what makes it stand out - for me anyway.
