Blugh. Worst. Musicanship. Ever.

Liquid Tension Experement, however, can be mindblowing.

Does... not... compute.

I mean the bands share three of the same musicians. LTE's writing may be better because it's more focused on the music, but I would hardly call DT bad musicians. Even if you don't like them.

The stuff they write from dream theater sounds like each muscian seperates to seperate corners of the universe, writes their own stuff, then puts them together randomly in the studio blindfolded and deaf. It's horrendous.

the LTE project music is a lot cleaner.

I feel like DT doesn't flow as nicely as other bands, so I can see how you disagree with their musicianship. But they definitely work together in studio =P There's no way they can play some of the stuff that they do without sitting down and figuring out every measure before they even rehearse. Which is what I don't like so much about their music. It almost seems mechanical. I like the changes and how it's almost impossible to figure out a set pattern, but I'd rather there be no set pattern at all than a difficult one to find, if you know what I mean.

If I'm not mistaken, a lot of DT's music is written through jam sessions. I may be wrong, though.

I also thought that was the case.

I know it's the case with LTE, but maybe not with DT.

It may be that DT's music is produced through jam sessions, I'm not 100% sure. It just feels real mechanical to me, y'know? It's cool and I like it pretty well, but it's hard for me to believe that the time signature switches are worked out on the fly. Maybe the crazy time signature music is what they rehearse for a fantastic live show, and their CDs are more jam-like. I'm mostly thinking of a DVD a friend of mine showed me. I forget its name, but it was DT concerts.
