Personally, I liked the series and ova endings, why the series? well if you have watched it, it should be obvious Shinji found his worth for living.
And the ova movie because of those death threats they received from the series conclusion, its a pretty much "fuck it", "if you didnt like the series conclusion ill just kill everyone, how about that?"
