I think the real question is "for what".

Although I understand the partiality to MP4 and its finer codecs, let me point out a potential accessibility issue.

If you want best quality/size ratio, no question, h264-encoded MP4

If you want to play it safe and not scare away the less informed, more casual, and perhaps downright poor users - XviD/DivX encoded AVI

In both cases, correct filtering, settings and other preparatory measures are key. Yes, you can fuck up the most perfect footage in the most perfect codec with a half-literate filtering/encoding job.

It's funny how like. 3 years ago. it was XviD that was the higher quality/smaller size but played on fewer computers, and MPEG-1 was the tried and true safe standard (which IMO it still is the safest one if you want to make sure ANYBODY can play it)

Stuff changes, I'll never claim otherwise (and I totally agree about MPEG-1 :P )

I would say in another year h264 may well be THE FORMAT.

But not yet. No matter what the technocrats may claim

:3

And much lub for x264 in mp4, in most cases, I'll release an XviD encode alongside as well, if only to show how much better the .mp4 is :P

I think the best is still xvid untill mp4 becomes more well known of its existance. Don't get me wrong mp4 is a better encode but xvid wont get you as many or any at all "No video" quick comments.

No ones really done anything about it so it's not going to change any time soon. People don't read video comments, there is no "We recommend (this program) for amv viewing" etc... on the main page or anything for newcomers. It's highly unlikely that any people new to the .org will have the required codecs for new file types.

Untill something is done Xvid is still the most accepted codec.

Remember people... VLC player is your friend.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

I like xvid for most cases. If I'm trying to make the best visual quality I can get then mp4.. But in most cases, if I can make a file small enough and look good enough for me with xvid then that's what I'll use. I will use mp4 for many reasons.. the one I uploaded kinda has obvious reasons of why I used mp4. Also mp4 is good for alternative links just to give the viewer options and junk. I would maybe always use mp4 if people used it much as xvid, but that's not the case and I don't mind using xvid anyway.
