If some of you people don't really even like AMVs then why are you here? A few newbs opinions on the matter aren't going to reform or change anything. If you want AMVs a certain way, make them that way yourselves. Obviously, lots of people like AMVs just fine the way they are.
As AMVs being inferior to other types of music videos, anyone with half a brain could film random shots of bands playing and splice it with scantily clad chicks in bikinis. Hell, I can do that by cranking my stereo, muting the TV and channel flipping. Personally, I see AMVs as the superior music video form. ^^

First, those were not my intentions, and if that's how I sounded, I did not mean to. Second, I don't think you can really compare an ANIME music video to a regular music video. They are not the same.Otohiko wrote:Judging AMVs as random, uninspired, and pale in comparison to other forms of music video is like judging the state of modern music based on what you see on MTV.
In a regular music video, someone has a vision and can shoot whatever they want, then its edited with all the material they wanted. It's pretty straightforward In an AMV, we have to grasp at straws for for the footage you need.
Example: You want to make a video from a song with lyrics about a guy breaking up with his girl. Most times you can't get all the material you need from just one anime. So what happens is you take related footage from various movies and shows and edit them together...but what does that create? Randomization to at least some degree. Sure you got related footage of guys angry and girls crying or something...but it's still random.
The above example does not pertain to ALL AMVs. But that is a very common thing I see. There are ways to work around that handicap of editing pre-edited footage to make it look like something new, without it being random.
I am very harsh when it comes to judging any video. (whether its an amv, a movie, a student film, news package...whatever) I look for technical problems, aesthetics, story/direction, and purpose.
When I watch an AMV I don't expect crap. Why would I watch them?
My main point was the statistics. There are many great AMVs out there...its unfortunate though that the number of beginner-level amvs outnumber the greats 10:1. And that's where I come across saying majority are random.
But I do not in any way say AMVs are uninspired or pale, nor do I compare them to other artforms. Art is art. But also, art is opinionated.

I don't think anyone would argue against that - don't worryOrange Kitten wrote: My main point was the statistics. There are many great AMVs out there...its unfortunate though that the number of beginner-level amvs outnumber the greats 10:1. And that's where I come across saying majority are random.
In fact, my take on it is that I'm at best interested in 1% of AMVs on this site. But that 1% is enough for me to keep faith in AMVing - but not blind faith. Critical viewing is where it's at - one just needs to be careful not to confuse a critical approach with an overly-presumptious one based on overly solid preconceived notions.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

...considering that to date, I even only downloaded 0.5% of that figure - very yes.Malificus wrote: 1% of 74235? That's enough for me too

And I claim that that 1% is made by the 1% of creators that would not stop making amv if they had no way of showing them to other people.
