Re: Full Metal Alchemist
While nothing exceptional,it was good to see all major characters again in this first episode.
Seems like the recipe for these first episodes will be the similar as to that of the 1st season...
The opening kicks major ass and the ending is nice too.
Let's see how it'll progress after the 2nd episode which will be the flashback one...

Re: Full Metal Alchemist
everyone was introduced so quickly, none of the buildup in the old series, just "here's elric and alphonse, then here's mustang, and hawkeye, and hughs, armstong etc etc etc." Guess they figure everyone knows all the characters already so they just decided to introduce everyone from the outset.

Re: Full Metal Alchemist
yeah, I do kinda get the feeling that this series is more for people who've already seen the old series or read the manga.

Re: Full Metal Alchemist
I've never been so disappointed in my entire life. Everything was all wrong. I don't know where to begin. The pacing was completely off. It felt like I was watching an OVA special of the show where everyone had to get their 2 minutes of screentime. In the shit tier opening, they showed glimpes of characters that aren't supposed to be introduced until late in the show (I think I saw Hohenheim three times in the first ten seconds). It's like they are completely banking on the fact that everyone who watched it has already seen the original show, knows all the characters, and isn't going to enjoy any of the plot points that are similar. I was literally screaming, "No no no no, that's not the way it went! They shouldn't be meeting Hughes for the first time. They delivered his baby! They don't meet Armstrong until much later! He saves them from Scar! No no NO NO NO. Fuhrer Bradley's badassery was one of the greatest what-a-twist moments of the show, and they brought it out in the FIRST FUCKING EPISODE. GODDAMN IT, I SHOULDN'T HAVE GOTTEN MY HOPES UP."
Fuck spoiler tags. I'm on a ragedump.
This was, without a doubt, the worst pilot episode to an anime I have ever seen. I'm confident that, if the original show hadn't happened, this pilot episode would have bombed. The Ice Alchemist, a new-to-show character, got almost as much screentime as the brothers did. The newer, crisper animation has none of the charm that the original did. I felt like I was watching a fucking kids show. They did the short joke like six times in succession. It was kind of funny in the original show, because it would happen every few episodes and we would see it coming and wait for Ed's reaction, but talk about beating a joke to death. How could they fuck up this much? The original show began EXACTLY how it should have. The opening scene of Ed failing the transmutation and witnessing his creation before going black.... I was sold. They showed only glimpses of that in this version, and it wasn't given its own scene. More like a momentary flashback. This show was exactly what I had feared all these years, ever since someone brought up the possibility of more FMA. I said that I would rather them just leave it where it stands and not risk staining the already beautiful canvas by trying to enhance it further. This makes me sick.
For those of you who don't know me, Fullmetal Alchemist was the anime that got me into anime. I obsessed over it for a year. I named myself on the internet after Scar, my favorite character. Having no name, his people simply called him "Ishbalan." I thought that was so cool. In my mind, it was the greatest show ever created and I wanted the whole world to know. I even made my parents watch the damn show. That was about 3 years ago. Since then, diving into the world of anime, I've discovered many greater titles, and Fullmetal Alchemist slowly inched its way off of my top ten. But I always kept it in a special place in my heart that would ensure I never forget it.
I feel like I've been raped. I want to cry but can't. I'm going to bed.

Re: Full Metal Alchemist
I liked the first episode, not sure if this is how the manga started but it would have been a drag to have to go through all the same character introductions again. The action started and it was one episode of action, I'm tired of slow starts so this episode really drew me in. But yes I do agree that the producers are probably assuming that most people watching Brotherhood will have already seen the original series.
The original series was great, whether it followed the manga story or not. What I DON'T want to see happening again are the same events being done the same way as the original. Doing events differently makes watching the show exciting again imo.

Re: Full Metal Alchemist
I enjoyed the first episode as well. I've never read the manga but have taken a peek at the 1st volume and from what I've thumbed through it's like the 1st episode of the last series. I would have hated seeing all that over again so I'm happy they went with something completely different. However, it was like watching a beginning "filler" episode.
I was going to buy the manga but when I heard this series was going to be based off of the manga more, I decided to save my cash and see where it goes. I might still buy it though for comparison.

I'm hoping it gets back on track with the manga, I can understand that they wouldnt want to make the first ep exactly the same as the old series as it would bore the people who have already seen it, but I really hope they keep the general story intact.

Re: Full Metal Alchemist
To redo the opening to follow the manga, they'd have to take 15 episodes of boring redux. Yes it would be good to non-fans, but that's not the target base. We already know Bradly is a badass , there's no reason to hide it. This episode was just an "okay everybody, fma is back, here's where all the character are right now)Ishbalan wrote:I've never been so disappointed in my entire life. Everything was all wrong. Basically, it's not supposed to be as good as the first series opening, because that would take weeks to properly get to where the new plot actually starts. This is just the episode where everybody gets their two minutes of screen time. (Also, I think that was father, not Hohenheim)
Personally, I'll just replace the first few DVDs of this series with the first few DVDs of the old one, and I'll have the perfect collection.

Re: Full Metal Alchemist
Ishbalan is one of the few FMA fans I've seen who doesn't worship the manga story and complain about how the first anime deviated, they actually like the first series, I love it, but i'm not that picky about that kind of stuff, just not big on filler, that's how I am, I think I'm one of the few people in the world who's still waiting for the legal stream of FMA in America, everyone else is like, "I saw it through bittorrent but I watched a fansub."
I'll take a quality translation over a quick speedsub, at least it'll be translated by professionals. Besides, I'm having fun anticipating Thursday.

Re: Full Metal Alchemist
I've never actually read the manga, I'm just familiar with it, and the original FMA is one of my favorite anime of all time. I don't consider the first series's diviation from the plot "filler" because they changed the entire plot itself instead of just extending it. It did it's own thing, and I'm okay with that, because it was still fantastic.guardiansoulblade wrote:Ishbalan is one of the few FMA fans I've seen who doesn't worship the manga story and complain about how the first anime deviated, they actually like the first series, I love it, but i'm not that picky about that kind of stuff, just not big on filler, that's how I am, I think I'm one of the few people in the world who's still waiting for the legal stream of FMA in America, everyone else is like, "I saw it through bittorrent but I watched a fansub."
I'm not expecting this to be "better" in any way, just different.
