they pretty much explain it in the first few eps i believe, well not completly, but just in case...

She is one of the wispered... i don't quite remember what was so special about them tho. From what my brain tells me they hold key information about the lambnda (how ever you spell it >.<) drive and other things. I need to watch it again -_-

The Whispered have other abilities, but what those are is never really explained too well. Although, near the end of the series, Tessa puts one of her other abilities to use. At anyrate, the Whispered are the source of incredibly advanced technology, called Black Technology.
