Well, after watching many of the Top 10 % AMVs i would say that the AMVs with most special effects is the ones that tops the list. The use of songs that fits with the anime is mainly a base from where to start the AMV. And the lyrics does'nt always match the scenes (i can understand that it would be VERY hard to do that, so im not saying its a bad thing), mainly because most of them are very "fast paced".
But all in all it looks like its the editing skills that attracts most viewers.
I may be wrong though...
