Back when typewriters were first invented, letters were typed monospaced (meaning all characters on the keyboard took up an equal amount of space on a line. It was difficult to distinguish the end of a sentence while there was basically the same amount of space in between the beginning and end of sentences as there were in between every other word. So, to combat this problem, using two periods after a sentence-ending period became standard.
However, with the advent of modern computer-based typeetting, letters no longer need to be monospaced on a line. Additionally, the printed period was enlarged. Placing two spaces after a sentence-ending period was no longer necesssary.
Thus, the standard is now one space after a period.
