Like any hobby, there are your absolute noobs who annoy everyone and there are elitists. Usually only the elitists will get uber-picky about others' costumes, but in general, it is best to pick characters you can actually resemble- like Unpronouncable_Symbol said, if you're really tall, you may not want to cosplay a character who's known for being short, like Ed from FMA.

I also think U_S was right about what the stigma is; a lot of people see cosplayers as scarily obsessive, or that they think they ARE the character. Of course, this isn't true in the vast majority of cases, but like any group, it's the extreme individuals who are the loudest and perpetuate the stereotype.

If by "cosplay" you mean merely dressing up as a character, then yes (but it was very cheap and required little effort).
I sew most of my own outfits and have done so for my nephew and some of his friends.

I no way at all resemble the characters except for the clothing, but that doesn't stop me
"Didn't I say something clever earlier?"
"Dunno, I was probably asleep when you said it."

4 entirely I do not understand, this discussion leads to what.

I personally require in order my right to depict complete fool from itself respected by all other members of free society.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I have cosplayed and plan to do so in the future. However, most of the people I cosplay with have the not so popular opinion that you should look somewhat like your character (i.e. have the correct body type). Granted, I can have this opinion because i'm not... well... to put it simply... overweight. Not suprisingly, a lot of people who like to cosplay don't hold on to this belief.

Then there's the issue of how much effort one puts into their work. The general cop-out for not puting work into one's costume is "it's just for fun." Personally i see this as a cop-out (the reason why i state it as such). But that just may be my personality...

I have not ever cosplayed.......yet.
What is really cool though is when someone creates a near perfect costume and are able to walk around in public without standing out like a sore thumb! I really wish i could pull that off.

I've cosplayed twice, both for Otakon. Last year I went as a budget Monkey D. Luffy (just blue jean shorts, a borrowed red muscle shirt, a straw hat... and sandals I think, but I forget). This year I went as Otacon (get it?), and this one actually cost me money; I had to buy the labcoat from eBay. Next year I plan to go as Shikamaru, which will require I spend more money for a Chuunin vest, not to mention the rest of his outfit (I already have the headband).

As for it being a requirement that the person resemble the character... it obviously looks best that way, and I personally aim for characters that look something like me. But it's not really a requirement if you're just having fun, which lots of people are.

I meant that when I did it, it was very cheap and required little effort (only thing I bought new was hairspray).

here in Philly, iv'e never gotten the chance to get out but iv'e thought about it, because of my linkiness i'd probably go for the Spike Spiegel look, it'd be easy since my hair can get naturally poofy. hardest thing would be getting those little blue shoes. but doing the group thing would feel alittle nicer.

Haven't cosplayed yet, but ever since I went to the con in Denver I've been wanting to. I personaly have no talent for making costumes but I'm going to have either a costume for Larva(Vampire Princess Miyu), Chrno(Chrno Crusade), or Celestine(Ah! My Goddess the Movie) made for me. I'll probably go with Celestine as I have never heard of anyone cosplaying him. I just have to wait till I get back to the states before I can have the costume made. Hopefully I'll be wearing it atleast one day to next years con. :P
