What do you think the Best Art/Animation in a TV series is?

If we're going to include openings I much prefer the opening to 2nd Gig. The first one is nice, but it clashes with the art style of the series itself (which is also very nice). I think they made a good move with keeping the characters in that series hand-drawn rather than using CGI for them.

FLCL also makes for good eye-candy.

Artwork and animation is a big factor for me when deciding which shows to watch. My favorites:

Gankutsuou. Already listed above but worth mentioning again. It's amazing how the animation quality never drops off during the course of the series. Too bad not all Gonzo series can be that way (coughSpeedGraphercough).

Heat Guy J. A bit more traditional, but still very nice. It's like Escaflowne but in an urban metropolis setting, animated with more modern techniques.

Kaleido Star. Who can resist the performances?

Paradise Kiss. Other people have complained about its artwork, but I like it a lot. It's very nicely stylized, coming off as rich and detailed.

If you haven't already, you might want to check out Twelve Kingdoms. Its setting is very different from RahXephon's but the character designs and color palette are pretty smiliar. And it's an awesome series all around, to boot. :P

Oh yeah, I guess I missed one... Makoto Shinkai's works like Hoshi no Koe and Place Promised in Our Early Days also has incredible sense of color and attention to fine details. The prettiest skies that have ever been animated in all honesty.

Definitely have to agree about RahXephon.

I also LOVE the animation in Paranoia Agent.

I see what you mean. I just watched a AMV of it and now I want to look into it more. I think it's more like a combination of Escaflowne/Wolf Rain. Thanks for the heads up. Always nice to watch a full series that is a visual feist throughout.

I'd have to say that wolf's rain was very impressive.

Elfen Lied has great artwork. The opening and ending sequences feature artistic drawings that are drawn on a style based on Gustav Klimt's paintings. So check them out.

There are so many others out there with great eye candy too :D

I second this.

From art and animation the best I've seen so far is Blue Submarine No.6. It mixes CG and cel art in a way that you don't notice it, and it has a good bunch of really fast paced action sequences.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, best live concert scene in anime history, if not the ONLY live concert scene...

ANYTHING by Kyoto Animation is near Godlike! [Full Metal Panic TSR comes to mind]

Genco series anime take an award too! [DearS, Please Series!, Ikki Tousen - despite lack of story, sexy fights are good]

Madhouse as well [X, X-Tv, Ragnarok Online intro, Tenjou Tenge, Air Gear] Though I think they're infamous for shitty endings...
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

I definitely have to second X (TV). Actually, just about any of the more recent series that CLAMP's animators have put together are gorgeous. Despite the truly odd proportioning, even xxxHolic is pretty to look at.

I also second The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for its extreme attention to detail, as well as Kaleido Star for the beautiful acrobatic sequences. Much like jasper-isis, artwork and animation are a big deal to me. That's why I can't get into things like DBZ and Akira. The look of it is awful to my eyes (not to mention that I'm just not interested in the stories).

I'm really surprised that no one has mentioned Le Portrait de Petit Cossette. It's just amazing what they did with the CG work in that anime. It's too bad that it was only three OVAs long. Then again, it probably would have turned out to suck if they had made it any longer. Still, this is an anime that anyone should check out just for the hauntingly lovely artwork.

I think Fruits Basket is gorgeous.
