I have to admit that I was a bit latched on to Intel (name) and wasn't real sure about getting an AMD machine. But seeing everyone here list they use an AMD, I guess AMD is every bit as good, cool (temperature), and reliable?

I was looking at this new bad boy right here....

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 6003680581

It's got a AMD Athalon 64 X2 rated at 3.0GHz (per core I assume) and 3 Gigs of memory. It's weak spots look to be graphics card and that it doesn't have a TV Tuner. I want a TV Tuner real bad but not sure if I should get it now or just wait and add one on later. I mean some of that money can go into a better processor or RAM. You can add on to a TV Tuner but a processor is what it is and will be, right?

What do you think?

Anybody here use a TV Tuner to capture episodes from Sat/Cable and edit them?

AMD is fine. We actually have a couple of people from the processor industry, so I'll leave it to them to get into detail.

What I CAN say is that at the time I bought it (~2 months ago), my AMD processor was far more affordable than an Intel processor with similar performance. It seems to vary depending on time and where you buy it, of course.

I'd definitely suggest switching to a dual-core machine either way. These things already rock, and software is only going to get more and more optimized to run on them over time.

Hardware:
Intel Core2Duo 6400 @ 2.13GHz (probably should over clock a bit since I idle at around 34C)
GeForce 7950GT (BenQ 20.1" widescreen)
4GB DDR2
900GB of WD SATA HDDs (3 drives) internal - another 200GB in an external enclosure

Software:
Premiere Pro 1.5
Photoshop CS2
After Effects CS3

(I actually have all of CS3, but i'm more comfortable with the other stuff... anyone want to sell me on running all CS3?)

AMD Athlon64 3000+ (Which I hope to upgrade to a faster dual core soon)
nVidia GeForce 6600
1 GB RAM
Vegas Movie Studio 6.0

I do want to upgrade this piecemeal, starting with the processor, but my husband's computer needs upgrades far more than mine does, so we'll be attending to his first. Software isn't getting upgraded though--I don't feel I need any more editing power than I already have. I do use Photoshop occasionally, but not often.

Athlon 64 3700+ @ 2.86ghz
2GB RAM
2x 160GB SATAII Raid0 + 2x 160GB SATA
7800GT, 22" Widescreen LCD

Overall fairly happy with my rig, though a C2D rig would be nice.

Desktop:
AMD 64 X2 3800+ (2.0 GHz overclocked to 2.4)
HIS Radeon x1950pro IceQ3 turbo
2 Western Digital Raptors (36GB) set up in raid0
Western Digital Caviar 320GB Sata2
generic 250GB sata drive
2GB (2x 1024) OCZ dual-channel pc3200 (2-3-2-5)
Corsair 1024MB (2x512) pc3200 dual-channel DDR

Logitech wireless slim cordless desktop S510 Keyboard+mouse
LG Flatron lg1952 (19" 1280x1024 [5:4] native)
Logitech X-230 speakers (2.1)

I'm running XP SP2, Adobe premiere pro 1.5 and Adobe After Effects 6.5 pro
I use dvdDecrypter for ripping, DGIndex+avisynth+vdubmod for the rest
for encoding I'm using meGUI

Laptop (Arbalest):
Compaq Presario R4012US
AMD Athlon64 3200+ (yes, it really is the s939 desktop cpu in there)
1GB pc2700 ddr (2.5-3-3-7)
Adobe premiere pro 1.5 and Adobe After Effects 6.5 pro

I don't really edit with my laptop any more, and with my desktop's 3GB of ram I don't really have any problems with avs scripts (avsp gets really ram hungry)
The only time I really wish that I had more cpu power is when I'm encoding with meGUI (with my settings it goes at about 4-7 fps)

I wonder why people buy Quad Cores
Intel stated that unless your computer is connected by a network or if you're an IT Professional, you can only use 2 of the 4 cores >.>

So unless you have some multi hard drive network, isn't a quad core a waste of money? A core 2 Duo is basically the same thing O_O

Let's see. I built a new computer about two weeks ago, so this is all shiny new:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
2 gigs RAM
600 gig HD space over three drives (1 SATA, two ATA from old machine)
ATI Radeon 1650 (for the dual outputs and 512 VRAM)
LITE-ON keyboard and mouse

Oh, and two 17-inch LCD monitors. Any larger and they wouldn't fit on my desk. I'm running XP-64, and I think more RAM is in order. Probably another 2 gigs after AWA.

I have a laptop, but that's for coding and work and such. Not much editing going on with my Compaq C305NR with 1 gig RAM running Kubuntu.

Future proofing to an extent, as it could definitely make a big difference later on once apps make better use of the available cores.

I should be getting a newer system in the next few months, but my current beast is as follows:

AMD Athlon 64 3000+
1.310 Gigs DDR PC3200 Ram
Radeon x700 AGP 256meg
Hollywood Plus MPEG decoder card
1 500 gig Seagate SATA drive
2 250 gig Seagate IDE drives
1 500 gig external USB2 drive
10 year old keyboard and optical browser mouse
1 17 inch LCD monitor
1 19 inch wide screen monitor
Win2k, SP4, Litestep shell, modified longhorn theme

I roll with all the apps supplied in the AMVapp and
Adobe Premier 6.0
Adobe Photoshop 6.0
Adobe After Effects 5.0

I am also looking into having built a dual core AMD laptop with XP Pro and Fedora in the coming weeks once my loan monies come in.
