No shit. That doesn't mean that I can't dislike the mentality that results in my not being able to get any videos without sacrificing most of the day.

I must agree with flint for once....
like him, I will only download huge files if I know for sure the vid will kick ass...and I'm very tired of seeing huge amvs 60-70+...downloading them and seeing that it was just poor encoding....and it ends up looking like a 6 mb wmv...jerks
you're all jerks for making my phone line bleed
/end

Oh how convenient. A theory about God that doesn't require looking through a telescope.

I choose quality over size and I have a 26.4 Kbps connection so it might take 2-3 days of on/off downloading. Fortunately, I have Flashget which lets me pause a download without losing what I have obtained so far. I can also use it to schedule to download while I sleep so I find it very useful. It sucks to wake up to see the download is done only to find that I can barely see whats going on.
Flint, get it here! Flashget

Thanks, but I can pause and resume with Opera. That doesn't make it go any faster, however. It just means that I can spread one download over two or three days if I need to.

Flashget breaks up the download to use more of your bandwidth and can dial in, hang up, and even shut down the comp when it is done. High Recommend, but if you are happy with what you got, thats cool.

For me file size if irrelevant.
it takes me just under two minutes to download a 70-ish meg file, so it doesn't really impact my time. I'm more concerned about quality, as a video with cruddy compression is painful on the eyes, and all the more so if I'm doing an op on it since I have to watch it over and over.
I say that since you only have to upload it once, but (ideally) lots of people will be downloading it, spend a few tries getting the balance right. With the guides being as easy to follow as they are there really isn't a lot of excuse for not making at least a cursory attempt at decent looking videos.

I've still not learned to compress well enough, but i'm not that worried about it. I prefer videos that look great at full screen resolutions (ones within reason), so I try to create that.
Regarding the size concerns for those on dial-up connections, I'm on Dial up, and i learned a long time ago to not download stuff at home; I go somewhere else -- the vast majority of people I know, along with over 55% of the internet connections that exist today are broadband ones. Dialup users are a minority now.

I personally like good quality but I'm still new to encoding (most annoying thing of editing) and still have a lot of learning to do.
With my AMV that I posted on this site is 72MBs (though i zipped it up to 59MBs) and runs for 5 mintues and 5 seconds. Is that too large? I'm very happy with the quality myself but the size may be a problem for some not on broad band.
I may encode it a smaller size for the people on dial-up so they also can have a look at it.
FileFront is a good site to upload files if you need a place to put them. That's what I used for my video, unfortunatly it's an American based site but it's free so I'm not complaining.
