Alright to settle this little idea that there is no such thing as anime. Ready, here is Websters offical definition of the term 'anime'. i"ll bold some wonderful parts you should read and actually consider and then comment on them.

Main Entry: an·i·me
Pronunciation: 'a-n&-"mA, 'ä-nE-
Function: noun
Etymology: Japanese, animation, short for animEshiyon, from English
: a style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes.
a style of animation
It's a style. The fact that it originated in Japan does not mean it only can come from japan. Anime is classified as a style. And better yet it defines what the style is like.
that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes
There you have it folks. It clearly states what seperates anime from other cartoons and hand drawn shows. Now quickly think of shows in america that can be classified under this and tell me how many you know are like this definition.

And before you go pulling wikipedia, this is webster. A dictionary acknowledge as an offical source of definition. Hell i even think the government sanctions this of an offical source. So the answer is simple.

There is suck thing as American Anime.

damn, im too late.....oh well.
let me get out my personal dictionary to clarify "american anime"
give me a sec, gotta get my little reagin glasses..... there we go

Ahem.....ACK! ok
American Anime: American Cartoons that are made in the distinct Anime style including features such as large eyes, spiky colored hair , blush lines, red/blue around the nose and girls with curves despite their age.
now i hope that settles that, and i really cant see Disney under that section, the only they have are large eyes but that about it.

now im confused, i see a definition an "anime", just like older_gohan shows but, i just gave a definition on "american anime", which is probably what the link was for which is making me look stupid despite the fact the "personal dictionary" was a metaphor for using my 30second definition of american anime i made up on the spot, ahh now my brain hurts.

You know what's even funnnier. I looked american anime and nothing came up. But the real kicker was I looekd up japanese anime and nothing came up as well.

Let me put this simple, anime isn't defined by the country but the style. You realize that's what the definition said. If you didn't notice I can highlight it again for you.

Saying something is 'American anime' is only clarifying where the certain 'Anime' came from.

This may be just me, but how the hell can you type in "japanese anime" when anime is shortened Japanese for "animeshon," English word animation. It'd be like me typing in American Cartoon (no results by the way). That makes your argument weak. Animes are Japanese cartoons. I don't think there's a word for cartoon in our land except for... 'cartoon'.

Here's the proper etymology for anime, which you failed to list correctly:

Etymology: Japan + (an)imation

Call me a conservative, but as they call gay marriage a civil union, I shall call American Anime "Anime-ish styled cartoon." Fair enough? :)

I guess Max Payne isn't much of a yaoi fan...
