Bang. He's nailed it on the head right there. And it's far more exact than anything that's been said so far about metal here, mind you...

Otherwise, I think the question is silly. Other than DWP's list here, I wouldn't be able to come up with a generalized 'why I like' description for something as broad as a genre.

Comparison also doesn't work. What does objective comparison with a song that you associate with a certain event or place in your life? What does objective comparison have to do with the "beauty", "passion" or "depth" of the lyrics, even? What does complexity, especially average complexity per genre, have anything to do with it?

Personally, my perception of music is somewhat visual. I like texture. I like 'feel' in music, I don't care how it achieves it.

For some, you don't need justification. I like dada rock because it's dada, dada, dada.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I thanked madbunny for getting the point of at least giving something of a reason not I just do.

Thank you downwithpants though genre have it by degree. Lyrical based music is out so guess not everything has such elements in combinations.

BTW I break posts up to resond to the many. Its called white space because big ass un-indented blobs are bad for the eyes you moron.

Flint you misread most everything so shut it because I don't think you could read the back of cereal box.

Let me do the arrogant thing I did not want to do; I'll say what I think about the value in music I am not fully familiar with.

Country - Folk Style Small Town Relationship with simple lyrics, religious overtones, and patriotism.

Classical - Complex with a great speed range, musical movement, and great number of instrument sounds.

Rock - Rebelious, but mostly tame and all in fun with a blues backing to remember high school days of past.

Punk - Parental rebelion at its finest with simple everything for the sake of speed and an ear grinding sound just to piss em off.

Rap - Urban tough guy act with lyrical and beat base with simple sounds for easy rememberance.

The list goes on but I hate to spell out what I think when all I wanted was an intelligently formulated opinion of some else about something NOT METAL.

Thank you most everyone for dashing my hope that you humans are something other than a rapid pack of prefab conformists to cultural doctrine and environment without the ability to make or understand your own choices.

I had almost forgot why a went to other sites with articulate, respectful, and intelligent people. Silly me.

So I say LOCK THIS FORUM BECAUSE HERE ARE THE SEVEN WORDS YOU CANT SAY ON TV:

SHIT, PISS, FUCK, CUNT, COCKSUCKER, MOTHERFUCKER, and TITS

Why Tits and Piss the world may never know.

You've managed to make brash generalization of other genres that aren't metal.
"If you're not cheating, you're not trying!" - R.I.P. Eddie Guerrero (1967 - 2005)
Through tragedy, she found triumph. R.I.P. Coretta Scott King (1927 - 2006)
Long live the "King of Pop"! R.I.P. Michael Jackson (1958 - 2009)

I read very well, thank you very much. You suck at writing, and from that piece of crap list you shat out, you overgeneralize everything. I'm ashamed to have you to share the metal genre with because, despite what I thought at first, you're about as short-sighted as anyone I've come into contact with. You have clearly not listened to much outside metal, or your narrow specifications would not exist.

You would've held on to at least some dignity if you'd maintained your obscure, vague query and not asked for pseudo-intellectualism. Several of us came into this conversation respectfully and have been far more articulate than you. If you spend so much time on other, more articulate, forums, perhaps you can ask someone to teach you how to GRAMMAR.

And branch out a little before you attempt to judge any other music. I can't listen to any more crap from you.

This reminds me of a racist asking how to tell people of a given race he/she has disdain for apart. The correct responce is a bullet to the forehead. :?

You know, the reason you are getting the kinds of responses that you are is because (at least from my POV) it sounded like you were saying that you had no clue why anyone in their right mind could ever like anything but metal, and as people actually did give coherent responses, you proved your closed mindedness by getting mad at them for going against what you said, then changing your question/stance several times, expecting everyone to read your mind and keep up with the change and getting mad when they don't. "Why the hell could anyone like anything but metal?!"=bad topic that is very likely to be flamed/locked. "What kind of music do you prefer and why? Be specific"=good topic open to more participants and more civilized conversation/debate. And when starting a thread, be prepared for people to oppose you. That's the point. As I've said many times before, if everyone here agreed, this whole forum would be full of threads with an opening statement and everyone else going "yup." I mean yeah, I do prefer metal/hard rock because it does cover a broader range of topics/emotions, etc as well and interesting ideas and I actually find it to be soothing. (I guess under the same logic as giving ritalin to people with ADD. lol) But I also like a lot of other kinds of music. Like new age for its beautiful, deep, poetic lyrics and soothing music. Techno for its upbeat energy, interesting sounds, cool beats. The kind of stuff that makes you want to get up and dance. I like classical for its rich sound, full range of emotions, and overall complexities. And I would just as soon go to a classical concert than a metal concert. I mean yeah, you get all the lights and pyrotechnics at a metal concert, which is cool. But there is a lot more to music than flashy effects. And you are a simple person indeed if you absolutely need the flashy lights to properly enjoy a concert. And now I seriously feel like I'm fighting with my 15 year old brother now. (Only I'm defending other music against metal rather than rock against rap. lol) Anyway, none of us have ESP, there is a world outside of metal. Now the elves better go make me some cookies.

Well said.

Admittedly, I'm surprised it hasn't been locked yet. Letting HeavyMetal get in his last words, I suppose. But maybe something can still come out of this.
