Well I don't believe that applied to this contest ^ because the one that beat me was a pretty damn good video.

there's a circle of editors that submit everything they work on to every con that has an amv contest whether big or small, so it's hard to tell.Sephirothskr wrote:Well I don't believe that applied to this contest ^ because the one that beat me was a pretty damn good video.

Re: AMV rant
If you can't find footage without watermarks, you can download a VirtualDub plugin for blurring them out. Obviously you'll want to do this BEFORE you start editing, so you know that the logo will always be in the same place. It's quite effective, and the blur is a lot less distracting than the logo.
I got a few watermarked entries for AE. For the first one I asked for a resubmission, but the rest I just figured I'd wait as see if they made the finals and worry about it then. Not surprisingly, none of them did.
Watermarks are more than just an aesthetic issue. If you show an AMV at a convention, and it has a noticeable Japanese TV watermark, it implies that the convention is OK with people downloading anime, and that's a slap in the face for many of the industry guests.

I consider watermarks a slap in the face for anyone watching the amv contest.

Re: AMV rant
Man this sounds like me back in the day. I've been around here since 2002. Youtube view counts don't mean anything. Sure it is maddening when your video is "good" and it doesn't get the views. However if you want your video to be recognized, entering into AMV Contest, making the finals, and having your video win awards is one way. Advertise it here on the org and in the forums in the sections that are dedicated to it. Do op exchanges and get feedback. Once you get 5 reviews in the first month your video may appear on the top 10% list. Which people will see and download your video. Since I have had my video "Don't Mess with Fairy Tail" here on the org back on May 4th it has 405 downloads and previews combined. So in 2 months I consider that not bad. It was my first video in 7 years so a lot of the editors don't know me around here. It's like starting fresh.Sephirothskr wrote:This really ticks me off. When you have the great editors around that spend hours and hours, WEEKS even working on an amv (myself included) and we post it to youtube.. your greatest work. A month passes, only 200 views.
Later in the day you're scrolling through youtube and suddenly: "WOW THAT AMV LOOKS KINDA COOL LET'S WATCH IT." One of the worst things you've ever seen with shots consisting up to 30 seconds long with no edits whatsoever. 600,000 views. This really makes me mad that the people who are putting no effort into their stuff are getting much more credit than they desserve, when those views can be going to someone who actually does desserve them. I know for me it's not about views, they're nice and all but it's not too much of a big deal. But this still irks me.
What do you guys think?
My point is get out there. Interact with the community. The youtube generation while there a lot of videos out there doesn't mean they are all "good". Just because something is not good to you does not mean someone else is not going to like it. Some people just like the anime or the song in the video. There are some "good" or even "amazing" youtube editors out there.
The one thing is we have to be supportive of the new generation. People who want to make top notch videos will. If you want to get the hits then just go with popular music and the popular animes. Just when it comes to contests and scoring your originality and your reviewablity may hurt.
Anyways keep cool about it. Don't get wrapped up in the numbers, enjoying making the videos because you enjoy making them.

So conflicting. Views are views, the location it's being watched just differs. Quality of opinion may differ depending on the location but that's all. If you have a video with 20k ratings and a load of views, does it not mean that a vast amount of people appreciate the video? but that doesn't mean anything? yet for some reason a few downloads does mean something. To be fair, downloads here count once per account, while you can F5 all day on YouTube and screw with numbers (or embed and auto-play everywhere). There is a world of difference between those two things.AceD wrote:Gene Starwind 21122 wrote:Youtube view counts don't mean anythingSo conflicting. Re: AMV rant
Thats why I included a ratings in what I said as well. Looking at the video I last watched there is 120k views, 4,600 ratings and 170 comments. You can say a lot of people appreciate the video, thus it's not meaningless. That's more my point. Some downloads alone does not make them more worthwhile, someone might find them to be more valuable to themselves but that doesn't make everything else worthless.BasharOfTheAges wrote:To be fair, downloads here count once per account, while you can F5 all day on YouTube and screw with numbers (or embed and auto-play everywhere). Ofc some videos are shady and use false tags and yadeyadeya...not like I'm refereeing to them, they are like what was talked about in the first page.
