Naniiiiiiii?!?! Rei & Shinji have as much personality as any other anime character, if you don't beleive that, take a closer look!

I know they have a personality deep down, but in Eva, they're always pushing it aside to please others.

Yeah i noticed that ... wat a shame that they do that, maybe sometimes they can, but if they do that everytime, then its like people r controling them not themselves ... wat a shame ...

I believe in falling in love with a real girl too.... most anime chicks I know of are flighty, confused, and often prone to random acts of violence or self examination, whichever is provoked by the current theme music.

Uh, they add the BGMs after the animation.
In the real world, though, there have been many research studies suggesting that pattern projection in cyclic motions is affected by music or visual/audible input patterns.
This means in plain speak, the rate at which people Push buttons, Walk, Talk, Write stuff, and Shit on the Pot is affected by what they see or hear.

THEORETICALLY:
By playing fast paced rock music in the WC, you could finalyl get your family members off the can and out of the loo 15% faster! TRY IT!!!

Back on subject:
I am not capable of "love", therefore I am not qualified to answer this question. But personally, working alongside (Kenshin/Cagalli/Ruri/etc) is DEFINITELY better than my current cow orkers. I can just imagine what Belldandy's office at the Heaven Society Council must look like... compared to Mironov over there >.>.

No, not really. Shinji & Rei usaully act of their own accord. As far as making decisions, The End of Evangelion movie contains a major world altering decision from both of those two. And as far as personality goes, they aren't really hiding anything, they do as they do to please themselves, and both have their own distinct method of acting, it's pretty crazy to say either of them doesn't have a personality.

Jon - as far as waking up and unreality and all that - of course anime isn't real, but given the chance to have anime be real and have the real Rei, I would take that chance. It's not like it's going to keep me from real girls.
