The manga has a pretty far-spread recognition, from what I've seen and from where I am at least. It's true that I haven't seen as much hype for the anime though, it's a shamecode_chrono wrote:I'd also like to add Gunslinger Girl. But as much as people wait hand and foot on the manga (since each volume takes forever and a day to come out, the first volume came out around four years ago, and there are only three volumes out now) I think the manga just has more hype.
