In general I see watermarks happening more so in the fanvideo groups than the amv groups...
general consensus
for amvers = watermarks distracting
for fanvidders = essential
I really don't get it, and when I ask most of them they are all usually freaking about "cliptheft" and seriously I GAVE UP on getting mad about that.

don't really like putting watermark on amvs, its quite distracting and the spoils mood of enjoying the video unless its small or not kinda obvious looking (same goes when you used some trail version of video converter which adds a watermark on your converted video and play it in your ipod, its just arhgg...distracting!)
I put a credit part put in the end or before starting of my vid,if someone wants to steal and upload it "or by means cutting the credits away, claiming its his vid" I dun really care or theres nothing to do about it (thats what i think, since you know that you've made it with your own effort theres no point to go mad for a thief)
what i did instead of adding watermarks, lol just a little credit part, its easy to know wheather the person steals it from tube or org but not much a matter anyways

I don't find a small watermark all that distracting, but I don't really like them nonetheless. And if I've learned anything in my brief time editing AMVs, you can make anything look like anything. So if someone wants to claim someone else's work for their own, there isn't anything to stop them. Not that I've made anything worth claiming, but it just isn't worth worrying about. I just want people to enjoy my work, even if I don't get any credit.
