Just read over at the AX forums that the one of the 'reasons' they are going to use the decible reader this year for the contest is that the creators don't want the awards annouced after the convention, because it would be 'really lackluster'.
Makes the 'creators' sound like a bunch of glory hounds. Personally I would prefer they annouce the results after the convention if they have to, if that means using ballots instead of the decible reader. They just don't want to use the manpower it would take to read the ballots. (Annoyed). Sure it would be nice to have the awards read at the convention, closing ceremonies or something. Don't even have to show the videos. But it's not required. As a creator, I feel it's more important that they use a fair judging system like ballots then anything else. If that means I don't learn who wins until after the convention, so be it.
What are other people's opinons?

It's called "the thrill of seeing your video played on the big screen and witnessing the reaction of a crowd of thousands of fans". You may have heard of it.xstylus wrote:You sound as if you disagree with that highly accurate assessment.anneke wrote:Makes the 'creators' sound like a bunch of glory hounds.

A problem with doing it after is the problem of handing out the awards.
No con likes to deal with distributing awards after. Most typically will forfeit your prize (minus the trophy/certificate) if you aren't there to recieve it. And if they were to hold onto it for next year there is zero guarentee you will recieve it still. (Joe Croasdale coudl attest to this one).
Announcing things after the fact is riddled with problems.
And to the other comment, keep in mind, it's not that someone would be a glory hound. If you get an award for something you feel a greater sense of accomplishment if there is somebody there to witness you managed it. How do you think olympiads would feel if medals were mailed to them two weeks after closign ceremonies? Or a large portion of college students would feel if instead of a ceremony they just mailed out diplomas with a "congratulations" letter a week or so later since they want more time to tabulate GPA?

This is true, but the only way to actually make the AMV contest equivalent to these examples would be if the winners were decided by judges beforehand or as they played live. The Wired Knight wrote:How do you think olympiads would feel if medals were mailed to them two weeks after closign ceremonies? The problem with the decible reader is that it isn't a very reliable/accurate judging system, which I think is the main problem that anneke has with it as well. Ballots are probably the best way to get an accurate measure on what the crowds think, but those can't be tallied on the spot.
So something has to be sacrificed somewhere. Either relinquish your vote to judges, rely on a less accurate system, or see the results after the fact.

I love hearing the crowd's reaction. but I can live without hearing about the awards until after the event, if that means the judging will be the most fair.
And using that it will be to much work to ship out prizes afterwards is a cop out. The convention is huge and rakes in tons of money so it's not the 'shipping' cost, it's again them not wanting to spend the time to do things right.
Then how many times have they waited until the last minute to test the videos and thus have had to re-do the Dvd at the last minute.

Did you not read Wired Knight's post at all?anneke wrote:I love hearing the crowd's reaction. but I can live without hearing about the awards until after the event, if that means the judging will be the most fair.

Your avoiding the point my friend.
The feeling of waiting for a award regardless of who wins or loses how it just kills the feeling of any recognition since it won't matter later to anyone at all.
Try taking it from a different point of view and perspective.

Y'know, I think you miss the spirit of the whole thing by whining so much about fairness and whatnot. Yeah, fairness is good, but making an AMV isn't about winning. I'll gladly take a roaring crowd over hyper-precise accuracy in judging. So, allow me to lecture you in what I think is truly unfair.anneke wrote:I love hearing the crowd's reaction. but I can live without hearing about the awards until after the event, if that means the judging will be the most fair.
It's the dead-as-a-doorstop audiences from AX2003 through AX2006. That is what's unfair.
Ever since the applause meter disappeared, there's no major reason for the audiences to cheer or express enthusiasm over their favorite videos. After each video that played, there was little more than the obligatory polite applause and that was it. It SUCKED ASS. Where's the energy and enthusiasm in that? A mere trinket is no substitute. Sure, it'd be nice, but it has roughly the same enthusiasm as getting a good report card. Well done, go celebrate with a beer, then go do it again. It's not quite the same.
Hence, I am VERY glad the applause meter is back. Plus, I think the way James and Katy instituted good counter balances to keep the judging fair overall are well measured and well thought out considering the situation.
I never made a big deal about the award I got. Seeing my video get cheered, and seeing people practically choke in laughter was plenty for me, and it remains the single greatest moment of my life. What is an award compared to that? In fact, since you've been the biggest critic of me winning one, I'll mail my award to the creator of "Spectacular, Spectacular" if it makes your fairness barometer feel better. Besides, I've still got my Cajones award.
