lightwave or 3d studio max

Post by marquis24 » Sat Mar 22, 2003 8:07 pm

does any body do 3d desinging with lightwave or 3d studio max because i am going to purchase one of them. my main problem is the price i can afford either one i am just curios becaus 3d studio max costs 3,000 adn lightwave costs 1500 i looked at both their websites and to me it looks like 3d studio max is the one that looks more professional but i also saw some pretty professional looking pics and vids on lightwaves sight. by professional i mean how real it looks i like realism, the kind you cant tell if its a picture or made in a 3d program. I am thinking that the realism i want and am looking for to judge the two by other peoples work with the progrma come down to the artist skill not the program. So basically I have no real judge if thats the case because it spending the extra 1500 on 3d studio max would be a waste if i can get the same out of lightwave. but if thats not the case i would waste 1500 on lightwave. I want to know your opinions about teh two programs cons and pros and personal preferences.
also does anyone run 3d studio max on windows xp if so do you have any problems, did you have to dload a exe. file because their website mentioned it might not run on xp (5.0)

And I will admit I have played with 3DSM downloaded (cracked) on XP. It works quite well. I wanted to see if purchasing it through my school would be worth it. It's not, so I deleted it. I have already learned, and addapted to Cinema. It works quite similarlly to 3DSM, though 3DSM has more flexability through scripting (plugins) than Cinema.

I believe you can DL a demo version of 3DSM and of Maya from their websites. I recomend you at least DL the demo for 3DSM and play with it before forking over a few grand for their software.

I've used 3d studio max, and it's pretty easy to use, but I never got the hang of animation...
I'd recommend Maya though, its hard to learn, but its THE professional tool for 3d modelling, and best of all, its a free download.

I use 3D Studio Max for animating and modeling. I haven't used light wave yet so I cant have an opinion.

3d studio is great for game multimedia, such as unreal tournament or unreal tournament 2003. the amount of guides for 3d studio are indefinite, and therefore make it one sweet buy.

however, since you're new to 3d animation, i would suggest 'animation master'. it's 200 dollars with a student license, and even though it's slow it's very similar to 3d studio max and maya's work. plus, making animation with animation master is incredibly easy to do; taking the 'timeline' option almost completely from 'adobe premiere', and seeing as how you're at animemusicvideos.org, that would be a great plus.

Poser is good for character animation.
I believe you can open poser files in 3DSM for the walk paths and such.

kamoc just because i am new to 3d animation does not mean i want to start with some lame ass 3 rate 3d program. When i started doing anime music videos i didnt have a clue how to make them i researched and found out what i needed and what was thye best. I bought adobe premire right off the back.I bought the book read guides and toyed with it until i learned how to use it. It took me 4 months to figure out how to get video into premire on my own. I plan on doing the same ting with my 3d video program and bottom of the barrel programs wont cut it for me. hard work patience and dedication pay off in any endevor you choose to do. Besides if it is similar to 3d max that would be a waste of 200 dollars that could have went toward max. I dont have a problem paying the money if it is warrented and worth it. Also if i spend the extra money I wil be more motivated to use and learn the program because i have so much invested into it. I appreciate you bringing this program to my attention but it dosent fit the bill for what i want.
