Favorite AMVs of 2019

Post by CrackTheSky » Sat Jan 18, 2020 2:04 pm

Hi all! Every year for the past five or six years, seasons and I have done extensive write-ups of our favorite AMVs on our personal blogs. These are purely individual endeavors and we do not collaborate on them (other than sending each other videos we like throughout the year over Discord, which isn't really "collaboration" but our tastes tend to be similar so sometimes the content of our lists overlap which may look like collaboration), but we both love to share these lists with others so I figured I'd make a thread to post them and allow discussion around them, AND discussion around some of your favorite videos from the past 12 months as well!

seasons' 2019 list can be found in the following posts:
Favorite AMVs of 2019 (Honorable Mentions)
Favorite AMVs of 2019 (#50-41)
Favorite AMVs of 2019 (#40-31)
Favorite AMVs of 2019 (#30-21)
Favorite AMVs of 2019 (#20-11)
Favorite AMVs of 2019 (#10-1)

And mine can be found here:
Top 50 AMVs: Non-eligible videos
Top 50 AMVs: Honorable Mentions
Top 50 AMVs: 50 - 41
Top 50 AMVs: 40 - 31
Top 50 AMVs: 30 - 21
Top 50 AMVs: 20 - 11
Top 50 AMVs: 10 -1 // Editor of the Year

For the best experience, I'd strongly recommend reading through these in the order presented, rather than just skipping to the Top 10 as people tend to do. Everything on these lists is great (or at least we think so), and is worth checking out, no matter where it appears in the rankings!

Also, if you want to check out our lists from past years, you can do so here:

CrackTheSky's lists

Enjoy! What were some of your favorite videos from 2019?

Not bad lists tbh, some vids at least i can relate to. 219 level wasn't bad , quite a bit of decent amvs came out. As about favorites , hard to say probably will have to scrub some stuff later (aka around vca) l:
Still better than that MMO.

I've been watching your top 50 AMV lists for a couple of years now. Some of the videos on your list I've come across myself previously and it's fun to see where you rank them. You always have a number of unusual entries which are great to see and I would not have seen otherwise!

I've not come across seasons' list before so that was interesting to watch through as well. I must say I was completely stunned to find one of my own videos just kinda hanging out unassumingly on their list. I have no idea what to say about that other than thank you seasons for thinking of my AMV so highly that it's one of your favourite 50 from the year!

Back on topic, it was really interesting seeing the similarities and differences between the two lists (I wonder did you both come across the editor Truth Crab independently of each other or did one of you suggest them to the other? :P ).
One of my favourite videos of the year was on seasons' list but not CrackTheSky's - I adored DopplerDo's Shame of Life video. Mainly because I have a soft spot for videos that have interesting overlays. Plus it's just badass.

A few of my other favourites which are not on either of your lists:

Rider4Z - Billion Dollar Baby. I'm surprised this one wasn't represented, considering it's FLCL and Kpop. Though most likely it got overshadowed by several other action/fun AMV's.

JazzsVids' - Into You. I loved this video because the sense of wrongness throughout is off the charts. I'd never heard anything about the anime before and it prompted me to watch it. That hasn't happened in ages, so this AMV has stuck with me.

Legato2400 - Hazy Fog. I usually do not like AMV's that include snippets of audio from the anime, this video however I don't mind because the rest of it is so unique. Yes, several AMV's have been made where the image is divided into two or more sections on screen, however I had never seen before one where it is constantly sliding across. This leads to parts where the both sets of images are syncing to the music in different ways, the sliding also varies in speed and I just find the whole thing completely mesmerising to watch.

A couple of videos that didn't show up on either of our lists that I think deserve some more attention:

It's hard not to admire how well this fits together. I feel like video game parody songs are where music goes to die but even I loved this.

I watched Princess Principal because of this AMV. I'll watch the movies whenever they come out, too. Terrific collaboration between ceddic and VideoBeats.

This almost comes across as too well done, if that makes any sense, but it's marvelous to experience at least once.

I liked this one a lot, not too many Dragon Pilot AMVs out there but they'd have to be really good to hang with this one.

Once again, there were too many good Madoka AMVs made last year and some good ones, like this, were doomed to be lost in the shuffle.

This is amazing and everyone should watch it. I don't know anything about the person who made it.

More classic Cowboy Bebop goodness, anime for adults with class.

This probably needs no introduction. Keep watching it every day like you've been doing all along.

I might have found his stuff first but I don't really remember, it probably came up as a result of searching for music rather than AMVs.

This was really interesting. I have mixed feelings about it but I'm totally glad I watched it. Thanks for sharing, would never have seen this otherwise.

Hard to say if there's anything "new" from this editor here but he goes all in on this and it shows.
