Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

Cowboy Bebop AMV feedback

Post by sharktoothgoosie » Wed Feb 03, 2021 8:49 pm

It's been awhile since I've posted on this forum. I've been at AMV editing about a year now, so I'd like to see where I can still improve.

Here is one of my latest AMV's. Any comments you have would be appreciated.
Thanks
STG

I really enjoyed this. Overall, the flow and pace was really good, and you did a nice job at cutting between scenes. I feel that there were a few times where the pace doesn't maintain itself and slows down for just a few seconds, but this didn't actually detract from the viewing IMO. I also felt that the source pairing was surprisingly fitting. So great job!

Thanks so much for this. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and critique. I really take all this in and try to improve, not just by submitting my own stuff, but also watching others work and seeing feedback on theirs. This is a great place to learn. Thanks again!

Opening shots are great, I like the addition of action and motion as the song comes to life. There's no shortage of atmosphere and interesting visuals in the scenes you choose and they play off the cinematic feel of the song on a level that's very fitting.

There's a lot of very literal lyric sync in this video, just enough for the imagery to feel specific but it never gets to be too much. Although it may come kind of close at times.

I like the transition 0:26 from the swirly "portal" in space to the phone. This kind of thing normally isn't what I'm into but I think it was used pretty appropriately here. The sequence with Spike and Julia in the rain is pretty great.

This song is filled with lots of little moments where there's a change in the music that's preceded or cued by a hand clap or a drum beat and you punctuate these moments with really satisfying use of internal sync (0:50, 1:02, 1:46, etc.). It hits me right where it needs to and I guess I'm "noticing" it because I'm looking at this video with an eye to write what you're reading now, but it's also subtle and never feels forced or too proud of itself (for lack of a better term here).

Great sense of mood throughout this video, which yeah, I mean most Cowboy Bebop AMVs are going to get that right if they get anything right at all, but I've seen these scenes hundreds of times and inevitably they often feel kinda played out, but they don't here.

It took me a moment to realize that you were the same editor who made that Banana Fish AMV that got posted here in late 2019 ("It's Not My Time"). Holy crap, you have come a long way since then. I'm not saying that video was bad, but this is a really huge improvement over it.

Seasons, you made my night! This is just what I needed. #1) The fantastic feedback (THANK YOU!!) # 2) To hear you that think I've come along way. That really means a lot to me. Considering I've never edited anything before I started this back in 2019, that makes me feel really good. I'm kind of a chicken about posting stuff here because I feel a little intimidated.
Thanks again for taking the time and effort to watch, and respond. <3 I really take all this feedback to heart.
