Gundam SEED - the fansubs

Post by aaronlye » Wed Jul 09, 2003 6:41 am

As anyone following this series knows, for a long time, AnimeJunkies was the only group putting out episodes at a fairly decent rate, but with the usual AJ discrepancies and inaccuracies. There were a few others, but most were straggling behind the AJ version by at least 10-15 episodes, though the translations were somewhat better.

Things started to change at episode 35 - when two other groups took them on and released their own versions of the episodes before the AJ release. Since then, it's pretty much been like that with yesterday's episode 39 release seeing three separate versions - AnimeJunkies, AnimeKingdom and Haiyaku Fansubs.

Anyone who's seen more than one version of 39 care to comment? Does any group(s) stand out, or are they more or less the same? How do the two newcomers fare against the comparatively established AJ version?

Personally I don't really care much for groups that just jump on the bandwagon and try to ride the wave of another group. Of course, I don't care much for AJ either. Personally *IF* I even watched gundam seed I would probably get the AJ version, just because I like to keep consistent. Of course, the day I started watching AJ releases, I would probably kill myself :p

Hmmm...my evil side is saying that you should watch AJ releases then...
But my happy "I enjoy a world with a Zarxrax in it" side is saying that I should eat more candy.

You're luck I like candy, Zarxrax.

Come to think of it, it wasn't just two groups. Around the same time, two others (Anime-Source and Anime-Xen) also started subbing SEED, but those two seem to have fallen by the wayside (the former stopped after one episode, and the latter seems stuck a couple of episodes behind).

But as far as I can tell, the reason behind these groups jumping aboard wasn't so much to ride SEED's popularity, as it was that they were trying to fill the gap left intentionally (presumably) by AJ - they were, if I remember correctly, having one of their hissy fits at the time and delaying their SEED subs, but the moment a competing episode 35 showed up, they released 35 and 36 rather quickly.
