What makes anime different...

Post by OmniStrata » Wed Jul 16, 2003 8:41 pm

Ok, I'm talking WAAAY back when...

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away...
DOH

OK, when you started watching anime, what was the one anime that grabbed you REALLY hard [preferably not by the gonads] and immediately set them apart from other entertainment media?

One title sticks out and I'm 100% certain any and every anime starter and lover MUST see...

Oh My Goddess...

Record of Lodoss War and Teknoman [Tekkaman Blade *shrug] were broadcasted on public TV a LOOOOONNNGG ass time ago and at first I thought it was just cool action stuff. Though when I took note that all the production credits at the end were all names I had no clue of pronouncing, I knew something was odd... off.... etc...

Then, I rented anime... [still too naive to note that it's all foreign...] I got pissed that most of them were in subtitled format. To this day, I still don't like subs... I inspected the design much closer. Characters are sexier... [duh, who'd miss that] bloodier, and there's more adult freedom [not sex you losers] in anime than any other drawn medium. Better plots, better character developments, better plot twists, more attachment to characters as you watch further, etc...

I finally discovered in early High School a group of friends who loved to draw. Out of the 12 who are artists, 9 of them had an odd style... [yes you guessed it! BIG EYES, SMALL MOUTH!!!] I asked, what is that? It looks familiar... One response: ANIME IS THE R0X0RS!!!!

And finally, I borrowed in VHS format [which shocked me since the guy I've only known for about 3 days just hands me over $100 in merchandise] OH MY GODDESS...

It was that anime that gave me this epiphany...

Anime > anything else... :D

Oh yeah, did any of you watch an anime that just made you realize this same fact of life? [er opinion, ] I'm talking WAY back when... Before DVDs were invented... Perhaps even, before cable TV became mainstream, etc... OLD SKOOL!!!

Nothing, I like stories that I think are good, animes tended to have these types of stories. I consider anime equivalent to any other type of media, but then again, I don't like to classify much.

I watched Digimon on T.V...

Then I changed the channel to Comedy Central after that was done.

That's about it. Anime never grabbed my by my testicles like it did many of you.

Kthulhu's Anime Autobiography:

Way back in the day, I saw "Unico" on the Disney channel in the mid-80s.

Kind of way back in the day, a strange neighborhood kid I was friends with was talking about how he stayed the night with his uncle and got to see this thing called "Dangaioh". I thought that was kind of interesting, then I went back to watching him make fireworks. Whenever my mom rented movies from my local (independent) video store, I noticed the aforementioned title there, along with other anime titles. I also saw "Akira", read the description, and decided that it sounded interesting, but my mom would probably never rent it (she being a wuss).

Later on, when I saw it, I knew I was right.

Fast forward a few years. I keep hearing about Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, and all that, but my local stations never seemed to carry them. My "loss", I guess  .

Then, anime just kind of faded out of my mind for a few years, until I saw ads for Evangelion and Ranma merchandise in the back of some gaming mags. It stuck in my mind until 2000, when I saw a few Kenshin AMVs, the infamouse Pokemon "Bitches" video, and a few Jesmaster vids.

Then, I saw the vid that I consider my initiation video - Some Guy With Nothing Better To Do's End Of Eva video set to "Plowed" by Sponge. The imagery, the song (one of my all time favorites) and the follow up research convinced me to watch Eva.

The rest is history.

And now you know...the rest of the story.

I'm out...

The first cartoons I saw that were of japanese origin were Dragonball, DBZ, Gundam Wing, and Ronin Warriors. I tryed to like Ronin, but it never did "click" with me, so I turned back to Nickelodeon until Ronin ended. Prior to that, I only watched Nick until I heard about CN. Wow, that must have been nearly 5-6 years ago. Since I'm only 17, that was a long time ago, or so it seems.

I had been introduced to anime by my friend Lee, and he showed me Ranma 1/2

But what really caught me was Project A-Ko and The Venus Wars

Robotech.
Even though I was still only in elementary school, I always felt pretty insulted by most of the cartoons. And then, out of nowhere, I was watching a cartoon that had... a story! *gasp* It dealt with romantic themes and developing characters but I think the clincher was when one of the main characters died. Holy crap!
