Last Link Check Info Displayed

Post by Phade » Sun Aug 10, 2003 11:59 am

Hey,

Now that the server is checking links, the results from the last check are now on display on the video information page. There is now a second line for the link info. It starts with "Checked:" and then will display the date, time, return code, and return text for the last check the server did. It will also be color coded: green = good link; red = bad link or down server; yellow = something else (see code/text). Hopefully this will help you before you go clicking a link.

Eventually, this information will be used to determine what links should be deleted. If a link is bad/server down for 7 days in a row, the link will automatically be deleted. Also, the link check will be implemented on inserting a link. This means that only good links will be put into the system and then rechecked every day.

Good luck and have fun!! ^_^

Hey,

At 2003-08-11 09:12:41 Central time, your server did not respond within 10 seconds. It could be responding now, though. The status will be re-checked tomorrow morning.

I'm not sure 7 days is enough.
Sometimes one can shut down their servers for weeks because they're on holliday...

I think one month would be better ?

I'm sure 7 days isn't enough, if "remove" means "remove from db". If it means "hide on site", then 7 days might be fine, but it should stay in the DB, and reappear on the site if it starts working, for at least a month, certainly. (The idea that people will fix their links (on the site) is probably optimistic in some cases, and it should hurt very little to keep it around longer (but hidden)).

Hey,

The best way to have the video always available is by using the Donut. External links should be for backup locations if the Donut bandwidth is overloaded for some reason. The likelyhood of someone correcting a link after a week of being down is not so good. An email will be sent to the video creator before the link is removed (currently planning on emailing on day 5 of consecutive link failed checks).

I do not really agree with that.
Our server which is at school has experienced some problems sometimes for several weeks. Yet the videos where still here.

From now I'm not a student anymore, and if the server is down someday, or if someone moves the video, I'll be able to contact them, but it may take time : The time I realize that the link is broken, and the time I can contact and talk to these guys...

Another thing is the 100 MB limitation. I have uploaded a 13 min video on the carrot for Animix. But it is a low quality version of the video, because the real one, hosted at school, is about 150 MB...

Finally, there are some videos of mine that I think don't deserve the right to be on the Golden Donut (videos that I don't really like, bad quality footage,...). Yet I want to keep the direct links, and not pollute the local server. Should I upload all my videos, even the crappy ones ?

Anway, this is not a real problem. If a problem occurs, I'll put back all the links when the videos are back, but it may take some time to rewrite all links for all videos (because obviously, all link would be broken if a problem occurs on our server)
