toughest site I've ever seen!

Post by drobertbaker » Thu Oct 16, 2003 3:29 pm

When I discovered this site, I thought it was a wonderful idea.

After 8 hours of reading FAQs, guides, rules, and such, I guessed that the reason I couldn't see "the best videos lists" was because I had first had to become a member.

After signing up, I was told I couldn't actually see any videos for two weeks.

After waiting patiently, it seems I can't use my download manager because the files are hidden behind some kind of php code. So I started a download which was fine until of course after a couple of hours my connection dropped and I lost everything.

Now any download I click on just gives me "page not available". I know that somewhere in here I read I would be punished if I didn't rate videos, although I can't find that part again.

I know there's a bunch of other rules and regulations scattered about. Have I broken some taboo? Am I in the penalty box?

I think you guys have too many system programmers figuring out how to create statistics on what percentage of users use their right hand to scratch their ass versus the left and not enough managers (sane people) keeping the site within human access.

Or is this just the anal retentive mentality it takes to make videos?

Heh, i'd like to hear your idea.

there's a reason.

What broswer do you use? Try mozzilla[ur/l] or [url=http://download.com.com/3000-2356-10211393.html]Mozilla Or Opera.

I don't think there's any punishment for not rating videos. as for teh page errors, try cleaning out your cache or using a different broswer.

I'll admit that the site is a little daunting to get used to navigating and using at first. It's kind of grown organically over time, hence the now apparently chaotic structure. I don't think that Phade (the site admin) has time to consolidate all the new bits of information on the site to one place.

First off, you're not in any kind of penalty area. The thing with rating videos is just Star Ratings (1-5 ranking), and the problem is only once you have downloaded 10 or more without ranking any.

That you have read the guides and FAQs properly shows that you are new member in a thousand. Most people don't bother.

Sorry about the two week problem. There's nothing to do about that one but wait

I'm not sure which download managers are usable with the site, sorry. I do know that there is a 60-second wait before you can resume, though.

The 'page not found' error might have been a temporary site problem, or it may have been that the links you were trying were faulty. If you could provide a link to one of the faulty ones, then maybe I or someone else could tell you the problem.

As for site organisation, you seem to know what a lot of stuff is going on at the site and how few people there are to help things run. I can't say that I have enough time to pitch in and help organise and run the main site, but I don't think that Hercules would, either.

This all-purpose guide might help too.

Welcome to the org where we try to make things as confusing as possible.

That's why I made my guide, I'm asumming you missed it because it's not on the main page.

apology

Post by drobertbaker » Fri Oct 17, 2003 4:18 am

Please allow me to apologize for letting my frustration be expressed as rudeness. It's not who I am.

Further, I admire Savia's sangfroid in responding to abuse with kindness and an attempt to help when she didn't have to respond at all.

Moonslayer, I did in fact read even your guide.

Clearly, this site:

- offers a tremendous service to the community

- is the product of vast love and dedication. I shudder to think of the person-hours expended on this project

- is staffed by some very competent and web-savvy folks

- continues to experience exponential growth in large-scale storage, up and downstream bandwidth demand, and user access

- has to deal with vast numbers of every kind of incompetent and malicious intruder

I understand site-creep. The number of difficult to design and implement facilities and features on this site is quite staggering. Just this posting page I'm looking at is beyond anything I've ever seen anywhere at any level.

I will continue my stuggle to access the wealth of material you (presumably) offer because there is some great stuff out there amidst the dreck and your categorization and filtering promises great time savings.

Sorry.
