Shy girl centered anime?

I'm currently looking for an anime centered around a shy female character similar to Shinobu of Love Hina or Haruka of KGNE. Romance series are largely prefered but not required. Whether the series is licensed or unlicensed doesn't matter to me.

Series I have already watched or currently watching that contain somewhat similar characters:
Ah My Goddess
Ai Mai Mi ! Strawberry Egg (A good example of what I'm looking for)
Ai Yori Aoshi
Chobits
Escaflowne
Fruits Basket
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Love Hina
Noir
Onegai Twins
Saikano

Most of these shows only feature a somewhat similar character to what I'm looking for. What I'm exactly looking for is a series similar to the first two episodes of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien.

So far people I know have recommended the following:

Figure 17 has a really shy girl protagonist, but it's not a romance series.

'Haibane Renmei' might work.

'Someday's Dreamers' will certainly work.

(though neither is romance-oriented, still...)

After some searching I found that the series also goes by Mamotte Shugogetten. Thanks for the recommendation. ^_^

While not romance, I definately second Haibane renmei (one of my favorites)
and Figure 17. Get now! ;p

Oh wow I forgot about Kanon, yea that does have a shy... well more innocent female protagonis.
I also second that.

Stellvias lead female is not realy all that shy... though shes not realy outspoken either. Not as shy as I think your looking for anyway. It is a good series that I do recomend though.

Another you could add that I just recalled is Now and then Here and there. (Ima soko ni iru boku)

Its more dramatic, less romantic, (not kissy date romance, but here are undertones that they like each other) but the girl definately is the shy type, well more mysterious. and she hardly ever talks.

Nevertheless, I really recomend this one, Check out my Swallow video for scenes of the series if you want, Although Fluxmeister's video probably show the nature of the characters better.

I'll post any additional ones if I think of any.
