This is one of the most debated topics about dbz who do you think it is Goku or Broly?

Goku was the first super saiyan we saw on the show but then we hear that broly is the legendary super saiyan in the movies. But Vegeta had told Goku about the Legendary Super Saiyan when they were fighting Freeza, and he said there was one Super Saiyan every thousand years and that was what the Legendary Super Saiyan was.

what vegeta says about the 'one super saiyan ever thousand years' was really supposed to be 'there hasn't been a super saiyan in over a thousand years'... from what i hear anyways

so there isn't some strange limit on how many super saiyans there can be.... obviously in the show they show a lot more than 1

as for the legendary one, that's a series quote, broly does not exist in the series, therefore it really can't be him, so if anyone, it's Goku because he emerges during a time of great crisis and becomes a super saiyan (in order to avenge his friends) and avenges the saiyan race from the tyrant Frieza
