A good anime for an emo-kid?
Anyone have any anime suggestions in the comedy, shojo or emo genre?[/img]

You know, if you asked me that in person, I'd probably have to physically restrain myself from punching you in the face (read my lengthy post in the music forum for details on that).
But I'd say Kare Kano (His 'n' Her Circumstances).

It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.

Kikaider: sad lonely kid with a guitar and a vintage 80s denim jacket, constantly pining for some girl (voiced by Horie Yui) and eventually breaking down into violence. There is no more emo anime character in history.
Only downside is it kinda sucks a little. Go with Kimagure Orange Road instead, maybe your emo-kid friend will ironically appreciate the classic 80s style.

For comedy (and if you know your Japanese animation), Excel Saga is a must-buy.
(If you like Excel Saga, just pick up Puni Puni Poemy -- if the anime seems way too out there, the wonderful commentary will have you laughing along with the insanity. )

Hmmmmm.....
Emotional anime like any story needs compeling characters that get you involved in their well being.
Wolf's Rain had me crying openly.... The ending (which spans several episodes was fantastic....)
Grave of the Fireflies.... This movie was just depressing... the guy who wrote it was doing so to help cope with the demons he had from living the story.
Revolutionary Girl Utena.... This is a show that pulls just about every emotional string there is in just about every permutation.... Great Shojo series

It's got comedy moments, but towards the end when things get a LOT more serious regarding "what it means to be alive", Megumi gives me an awesome performance that leaves me teary eyed multiple times. Probably the ONLY anime I've seen that I cry watching it's last eps repeatedly...

Some very good replies so far.
A few to add. Jin Rho, a dark and emotional story, plenty of violence. Trigun, a mix of humor and deep emotions in a well paced story. Azumanga Diaoh, this is bright full out comedy, even if it has it's tender moments ( miss Sakaki and maya), it is the only time we have had to stop an anime and wait for my daughter to get over her laughing spell, I think she would have passed out if we hadn't.

Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?
